Artist Statement

I am interested in the creation of narratives using historical events as a basis for the foundation of my exploration. I am interest in creating new metaphors by using historical artifacts while interpreting objects and figurative sculptures materially. New Metaphors create new mythologies. Contrast in materials and in the made and found objects are used in order to highlight the nature of each object while seeking a formal and conceptual balance. By changing the juxtaposition of objects in varied environments, their visual and conceptual roles alter the viewer’s perception of the narrative. Juxtapositions create shifting dimensions of time, a back and forth between the past and present. The objects movement also echoes the effects of a story being told and retold. Elements of the story are added and omitted. The various elements overlap each other; collide with each other, sometimes sticking and at other times repelling one another. The process is organic and my attention to the work shifts throughout its creation and final outcome. Constructed realities occur. I am interested in this construction, the basis for a world where elements of the real, fantasy, personal and the unknown work together to create a something new.

Tropes of display and drama are utilized in order to frame the narrative formally and conceptually while guiding the viewer through space. The viewers’ relationship to objects and their movement through an exhibition can operate like the pan of a camera. First a wide-angle, panoramic shot frames a world, giving it an emotional tenor and register. Than, the shot narrows and the details of the story are revealed. This approach also allows me to explore how spaces can expand and contract using color, the placement of objects, lighting and architectural elements of the gallery. As the viewer moves through the exhibition, boundaries are blurred and questioned as objects move in and out of the viewers’ peripheral vision.

I am interested in the landscape, emotion, time, romance, human drama, fairy tales, failure, history and materials. I want to make work that registers emotionally and addresses feelings of isolation and loneliness. If these conditions exist, than an opposite condition must also be considered. And it is what happens between these two conditions that questions are asked, fictions written, inaccuracies created and revealed, hearts broken, heroes made and failures witnessed. The North and South poles and their conquest provide rich, meaningful stories where the question of “why” occurs with no quick, definitive answer. In order to attempt to answer this question all elements must be examined from a representational and metaphorical basis.
