For more than 25 years, Tyler School of Art has offered non-credit studio workshops designed to meet the needs of beginning, intermediate, and advanced level high school and adult learners. You will find a wide spectrum of hands-on studio workshops.

DRAWING AND PAINTING WORKSHOPS

DRAWING  
Observation is the foundation of drawing. Explore a variety of drawing materials such as charcoal, conte, and graphite. Students will draw from many sources- landscape, still life and the human form, always from direct observation. All of the technical elements- line, tone, form, and composition will be employed as tools that facilitate experimentation.  This is a great class for those who need basic drawing skills! Please bring a large (18”x24”) sketchbook to the first class.

DRAWING AND THE SKETCHBOOK
Drawing will be a large part of organizing your thoughts and working out your creative ideas. A sketchbook is a catalog of your explorations. The goal of this workshop is to encourage intuition, risk, and the ability to push boundaries. Field trips are a part of this investigation. Please bring a sketchbook to the first class.

FIGURE DRAWING
This workshop is based on the idea that the human figure is a gift to the artist.

Focus will be on figure studies from direct observation using professional models, clothed and nude. You will explore the facets of drawing the fugure by investigating proportion, form, gesture and composition. This is an important class for students looking to enhance a college admission portfolio! 
Previous drawing experience is required.

PORTRAITS 
Working from extended poses with models, other students and yourself, you will investigate portrait and figure studies. Exercises are designed to give students a deeper understanding of human expression. Both composition and technique will be emphasized using an array of drawing materials

Previous drawing experience is required.

BEGINNING OIL PAINTING 
A unique series of oil painting studies will teach students to creatively delve into issues of material, color and surface. Working from still life setups, interiors, or landscapes, students will explore the use of light to create form in a balanced composition.

Methods and materials will be demonstrated. Individual development is stressed through one-on-one critiques.

Strong drawing experience is required.

AN ARTIST'S BOOK 
Exploration of art materials is often the foundation for an artist’s work. In this course students will have the opportunity to experiment with various tools and multiple materials - primed and raw papers, tools from ink and watercolor to dry pigments, from brushes and charcoal to hand-made tools. All images will be done on pre-determined size paper. This would allow students to bind all their work at the end of the course in one comprehensive album portfolio using a simple bookbinding technique.

PRINTMAKING “LAYER IT ON”

A print is different from a drawing or a painting done on a canvas in that it involves the transfer of ink from a "matrix" onto the paper itself to create multiple images. The class will focus on image formulation through several printmaking techniques such as block printing, and/or screen printing. We wil explore the multi-faceted processes that encompass printmaking with an emphasis on craftmanship, color, composition, editioning and layering. Students will learn how to operate different printmaking tools and studio presses.

DIGITAL AND PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS

 

THE ART OF DIGITAL DESIGN                           
The world has become increasingly digitized. By integrating digital drawing, existing images, photos and found objects, students will explore visual organization to discover new ways to create and alter digital images. Technical and aesthetic skills will integrate design elements of color, form, typography and composition, while also exploring creative solutions to conceptual problems. This workshop will focus on introducing the computer as an artmaking and design tool using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop on a MAC platform.

Basic computer skills are recommended.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY 
In this introduction to digital photography, students attain competence with a digital camera and with Adobe Photoshop to get the most out of creative image-making. From capture to print, students learn to optimize, manipulate and compose photographic imagery. Please bring your camera and a storage device to the first class.

Basic Macintosh computer skills required.

NARRATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY
Students will use their digital cameras to tell a story by the use of candid snapshots and formal staged photographs. Emphasis will be placed on use of the camera while creating images. Critiques will take place during every class session with discussions on editing and sequencing culminating in a final portfolio of images. Photoshop will be used as a finishing tool.

CRAFT WORKSHOPS

JEWELRY
The course explores jewelry design as it relates to contemporary art and fashion. Students investigate the basics of working with non-precious metals and sterling silver as an introduction to jewelry fabrication. Processes include sawing, piercing, filing, soldering, and cold connections to create finished pieces of jewelry. Individual attention allows students to work at their own level.

BEGINNING CASTING 
Explore various methods of wax-working along with the principles of lost wax castinpiecesg. Students learn to model wax and other organic materials, make molds, and cast small scale .

HAND-BUILT POTTERY
This ceramic workshop gets down to the basic elements of an ancient craft. Use hand building skills such as slab, coil, and pinch construction to create forms of your own design – elegant or funky! Some work will be fired in an outdoor raku kiln which produces dramatic colorization, subtly smoked surface finishes.

THE POTTERS WHEEL
Engage your centering powers! New or experienced potters can focus on increasing their skills through the wheel throwing process. Students will work to gain a greater understanding of three dimensions- height, width, and depth. One-on-one and group demonstrations during each workshop session provide the opportunity to work at your own pace.

FUNDAMENTALS OF GLASSBLOWING I
Experience the thrill of molten glass!
Gain a fundamental understanding of the glass blowing process. Learn the tools, techniques, and terminology of this ancient craft. Every class will have a demonstration and hands on opportunity. All materials will be provided.
