The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Degree with Teaching Certification Program enables a student to major in a Tyler studio area and also to pursue additional courses in order to qualify for Pennsylvania Teaching Certification in Art, K-12. The program requires 16 credits beyond the 132 credits for the BFA degree for a total of 148 credits. Students take all the courses required for foundation, their sophomore studio electives and studio major and art history requirements, the academic core, and 32 credits in education, art education, and specified academic courses. Students usually need to attend an additional summer session in order to complete all requirements within four years. All candidates for Pennsylvania Teaching Certification in Art, K- 12 must hold a 3.0 GAP and earn passing scores in the Praxis I and II National Teacher Examinations.

Tyler BFA with Teaching Certification students have three practicum experiences during their teacher preparation program, each accompanying academic course work in art education. Students view themselves as teaching artists, with a strong foundation in studio and art history study along with rigorous course work in pedagogy, child development, and curriculum to achieve a strong foundation for art education practice. Tyler's art education program is committed to diversity and urban education and all students complete at least one field placement in an urban school or community setting with a diverse student population.
