In the Fibers Area, undergraduate students
learn technical fundamentals through a curriculum
based on both surface and structural techniques.
New technologies allow the development of
surface imagery with photographic stencils,
as well as the creation of weave structures
on a computer AVL loom. Power Macintosh computers
are available to explore these and other
new technologies.
After mastering the traditional and contemporary techniques,
the faculty of the Fibers Area promotes individual experimentation,
the development of a personal direction, and research related
to each student’s specific interests. The faculty believes
that the fibers artist cannot separate craftsmanship from the
establishment of an aesthetic ideal and conceptual foundation.
Lectures, demonstrations, and individual critiques with visiting
artists along with field trips to pertinent exhibitions supplement
the classroom curriculum for students of all levels.
