Facilities and Resources for Art History
In 2009, the Department of Art History moved with the rest of the Tyler School of Art into a technically advanced and stunning new building. Uniting nearly all of the Tyler programs, this dynamic space encourages the interaction of the various departments within the school and promotes unprecedented synergy between art historical study, studio practice, and exhibition design, highlighted by Temple’s own contemporary art gallery. For additional discussion and pictures of the new Tyler building, click HERE for an article in The Chronicle of Higher Education (December 18, 2008).
The Department of Art History has been a leader within the Tyler School of Art and Temple University in its commitment to state-of-the-art digital technologies. In addition to having fully digital, multimedia smart classrooms, the Department pioneered implementation of the Gallery (MDID) image database and its linkage to the university's online Blackboard course management system. Students and faculty also have access to ARTSTOR, Powerpoint, and other image management databases and softwares, both within the Tyler School of Art and through the university's Main (Paley) Library art resources (click HERE to see the Paley Library art databases menu). Students express great enthusiasm for these innovative tools and resources.
Our location in Philadelphia provides access to excellent resources for the study and enjoyment of art, thanks to the wealth of museums, galleries, and research institutions in the city and region, including the following (click on each name for a link to the institution's website):
Philadelphia's art galleries are too numerous to list here, but helpful guides can be found at the following sites:
To complement these abundant local and regional resources, the Department sponsors regular field trips for students to visit museums in New York and Washington. We also invite a prestigious roster of outside lecturers to the campus, often in connection with graduate seminars. Click HERE for information about the Department of Art History Lecture Series. An even more extensive calendar of lectures is maintained by the Tyler School of Art and by the larger university community, making available an outstanding range of opportunities to hear leading artists, critics, curators, and scholars across disciplines. The Department of Art History has a strong archaeological and on-site component, with faculty currently directing excavations or other activities in Crete, France, and Egypt. Temple's Archaeology curriculum participates in the eminent Consortium in Aegean Bronze Age Studies (along with Bryn Mawr College and the University of Pennsylvania).
The Department of Art History also actively engages in Temple University's International Programs, especially by maintaining close ties to the Temple University Rome center. Undergraduate Art History majors, Tyler graduate students (Art History and Studio), students from other schools at Temple, and students from other universities may take coursework in Rome. The Rome curriculum takes advantage of the Eternal City's rich artistic heritage by featuring intensive on-site learning. Click HERE for information about the Temple University Rome program.
In consultation with their advisor(s), students in Art History determine whether study abroad would benefit their education. For information about Temple's other International Program sites, click on the following:
