Jonathan Kline is a specialist in the art of the Italian Renaissance and the European Middle Ages. His particular interests lie in the construction and communication of meaning in visual art, in the differences and continuities between historical periods, and in the Renaissance use of classical subjects as a means of conveying Christian content. He is the author of a recent article on Botticelli's celebrated Primavera (Sixteenth Century Journal, Fall 2011)and of a forthcoming study of Luca Signorelli's frescoes in the Cappella Nuova of Orvieto Cathedral. In addition, he is currently working on a book on classical / Christian typology and syncretism in Roman and Florentine paintings and mural cycles of the late Quattrocento and early Cinquecento.
