Art Education study at Tyler School
of Art, at Temple University at
both the undergraduate and graduate
level is structured around substantial
study of studio traditions and art
history. The interdisciplinary nature
of contemporary art education study
embraces additional fields of study
including pedagogy, child development,
curriculum, and community. In addition
to the Core curriculum required
by Temple University, students must
successfully complete courses in
studio art, art history, education,
and art education.
Tyler's art education program is
committed to diversity and urban
education and all students complete
at least three field placements,
at least one of which is located
in an urban school or community
setting with a diverse student population.
The art education program seeks
to extend to the surrounding community
through arts partnerships between
instructors, students, local artists,
and arts organizations.
COMMUNITY ARTS
The Art and Art Education Department's
Community Arts Program works in
partnership with community organizations,
schools, and artists in North Philadelphia.
The program develops and delivers
university courses, after-school
arts workshops, intergenerational
forums, and inter-disciplinary performances
and exhibits which are based on
an exchange of knowledge and images
between partners, to create art
based on the lives and stories of
North Philadelphia. Currently, university
courses and field internships are
offered which feed into ongoing
collaborations with local arts organizations.
Over the past three years we have
created performances and installations
that have garnered critical acclaim
and enthusiastic local and city-wide
audiences. We are a partner in the
new Community Arts & Literacy Network
of North Philadelphia, and collaborating
on program development with Art
Sanctuary, the Asian Arts Initiative,
Temple University's New City Writing
Program, and local schools.
