Selected Professional Accomplishments
Dr. Billy Yalowitz is a choreographer
and director of community-based performance
works. He was choreographer-in-residence
at the people's Light & Theater Company
in Malvern, PA from 1995-1999, and has
choreographed for other major Philadelphia
regional theater companies. Yalowitz's
independent choreography has been performed
at venues including the Painted Bride Art
Center, the Boston Conservatory Theater,
the MassMoves Statewide Dance Festival
in Massachusetts. He was nominated for
the Philadelphia theater community's prestigious
Barrymore Award in 1996, was named "Best
Unclassifiable Theater Artist" by
Philadelphia's City Paper in 1997 and Best
Choreographer by the Philadelphia Inquirer
in 1999. He has received grants from the
Rockefeller Foundation, the Woodrow Wilson
National Foundation, the Pennsylvania Council
of the Arts, and the New Forms Regional
Grant Commission, among others.
Yalowitz has directed and choreographed
community performance productions in several
Philadelphia neighborhoods including Kensington,
South Philadelphia, Mt. Airy and the Black
Bottom in West Philadelphia, and has been
an artist-in-residence throughout Europe.
