Why New Requirements?

Computer Services is in the process of implementing an Identity Management system called TUsecure which will provide the University community with a single username and secure password for convenient access to over 34 different systems. With the introduction of a single identity, it is vitally important to strengthen the passwords used throughout the University.

A modern PC can process about 10,000,000 passwords per second. Given this, a current Temple password theoretically can be hacked in less than four minutes. With the new requirements, it would take approximately 250 days. This vulnerability will be mitigated with the extra safeguard that passwords be changed at least every 180 days.

The following chart shows the maximum amount of time it would take to break a password, given varying degrees of length and complexity.
