The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Temple University (OLLI) was founded more than 30 years ago, and at the time was entitled Temple Association for Retired Professionals. The organization was founded primarily for those people who have retired from their regular lines of work and want to keep on learning, however the program places no age restriction on membership. Sponsored by Temple University, the organization boasts a lively, no-pressure learning environment in which students take a variety of courses in fields like art and architecture, computers, current events, finance, health, history, humanities, languages, law, literature, music, philosophy, psychology, bridge, science, and theatre and films.
OLLI at Temple is unique among adult educational programs in that students are not required to attend a course for the entire semester. Their attendance depends only on their interests. No tests or homework are required, and the only "pressure" on participants is when to seize the optimum moment in which to interject opinions during the lively and highly verbal class discussions.
Members of OLLI's faculty are also members of OLLI and represent a broad spectrum of professions, vocations, and life experiences. Collaborating closely with paid staff, the students manage the program through an elected governing body and volunteer committees.
Classes are held from Monday to Friday during the day. There is discounted parking nearby for those who come by car. On Friday mornings, OLLI presents the Friday Forum, a weekly series featuring guest speakers with diverse and interesting backgrounds. This program is free and open to the public.
OLLI is conveniently located in Center City Philadelphia at 1515 Market Street --just across from City Hall and just above the Suburban Station train stop. For more information, a course catalog, or a free two-day guest pass, call 215.204.1505 or e-mail olli@temple.edu.
Note: OLLI classes are open only to members.
