Initiatives

End Apathy

This past year, Temple Student Government launched an initiative to help end apathy on our Main Campus. This initiative involved several different projects that were intended to engage students in a variety of ways. Some of those projects were:

  • 1 K Help for a Day – A Saturday morning community service event that marked the beginning of Homecoming 2006. More than 1,000 Temple students came together to clean more than 20 city blocks in North Philadelphia after hearing an inspiring message from Temple legend, Coach John Chaney.
  • The Temple FactorThis initiative took place during the month of October in 2006 where TSG collaborated with other organizations to register more than 800 Temple students to vote. Many of them for the first time.
  • Philadelphia Mayoral Candidate SeriesDuring the Spring semester of 2007, Temple Student Government hosted several candidates vying for the position of Mayor of Philadelphia. Among those candidates were Chaka Fattah, Tom Knox, and representatives from the Michael Nutter Campaign. More information on these candidates can be found at http://www.philly.com/inquirer/special/mayors_race/
  •  Temple B. Moore – Similar to the purpose of ‘1 K Help for a Day’, Temple B. Moore saw more than 800 Temple Students work with Temple athletes to clean the streets of North Philadelphia from Girard to Susquehanna. On this occasion, Temple Football Coach Al Golden helped by speaking to volunteers about the importance of community service.
  • The Ride for HR5This initiative was directed towards supporting a bill passed in the US House of Representatives in favor of cutting interest rates on federal loans for college students. Temple Student Government educated students on the proposed legislation and collected letters from students and mailed them to their respective Senators in Washington, DC. For many of these students, it was the first time they had ever had any correspondence with their Senators.

Although TSG was able to make great progress through these projects and initiatives, there is still a large population on campus that needs to be more actively engaged with their campus, community, and government. Please join TSG in our efforts to end apathy by joining our organization, or spreading the word about important issues that affect us all.
