The TLC, in collaboration with the College of Education, announces Temple’s new Teaching in Higher Education Certificate Program. Graduate students can earn the certificate to enhance their knowledge of how people learn and best teaching practices, and to increase their competitiveness on the academic job market.
Temple graduate student track: Participants study general principles of teaching and learning and also focus on teaching issues in their own academic areas. Requirements for the certificate are completion of the:
- Teaching in Higher Education Seminar
This three-credit seminar, taught by faculty within students' areas (i.e. humanities, health professions. . .)
addresses key issues in teaching and learning theory and practice. Students develop documents useful for teaching and to support future job searches, including a statement of teaching philosophy and a course syllabus.
- Reflective Practicum
The reflective practicum is individually designed by each student. The practicum must include teaching (e.g. as TA, instructor of record, mentor to undergraduate, Writing Center tutor, or lab leader) and engaging in reflection on that experience. Options for reflection include taking part in weekly TA meetings, joining an ongoing reflective practice group facilitated by TLC staff, or enrolling in a one-credit module on a specific topic (e.g. assessment or technology in higher education), offered by the College of Education.
