Mission Statement

The Department of Theater will provide the highest quality professional training within a rigorous comprehensive liberal arts setting. Through the study and practice of the arts, craft and scholarship of theater, we aspire to instill in our students a passion for artistic leadership, creative communication and lifelong learning. We are committed to being a vital cultural force in the diverse community of Temple University, the Philadelphia region, and the world.

In the next decade, the Department of Theater will embrace our mission by creating a 21st century pedagogy that will lead us into the future of our field and enhance our community life. We hope to be supported by state-of-the-art facilities and led by an expanded professional faculty and staff so that we may continue to inspire our students to fulfill their creative potential.

Foundation of the Department

The Department of Theater embraces the spirit of creative community both in the classroom and on stage. Theater is by nature a uniquely collaborative art form. During your time here as a student, you are in every respect called to be a supportive, contributing member of a large resident ensemble, committed at every level of endeavor, regardless of the task, to achieving artistic excellence in our work as a company.

Goals and Objectives

Professional ExCellence

We expect our department to be a nationally significant, competitive professional training program with a resident company that encompasses production, performance and scholarship at the highest level of artistic and academic excellence. We will investigate the art, craft and magic of storytelling in all its disciplinary dimensions on stage, film, television and new media through interdisciplinary pedagogy that is responsive to tomorrow’s marketplace and the future needs of our multiple communities.

Academic Depth and Breadth

Undergraduate training continues to excel through our commitment to artistry and scholarship. We will institute integrated programs within our Cohort School of Communications and Theater departments, and foster collaborations with commercial and academic institutions to develop and further our research.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

We will explore the field of community engagement and arts education through the application of theater. We envision the continued development of our neighborhood and see our role expanded to include new initiatives in school and community programs.

INTERNATIONAL ENGAGEMENT

One day we hope to have the resources available so that our curriculum will be enhanced by courses, projects and workshops run by international visitors while we will serve in similar capacities abroad. We hope to be able to explore sponsored opportunities abroad for staff, students and faculty.
