Well–Heeled
In eight years of photographing Commencement, Betsy Manning, SMC ´87, CLA ´08, manager of photography and digital assets, has found that students have creative ways to express their individuality below the long hemlines of their graduation gowns.. So for Temple´s 126th Commencement exercises, she documented graduates´ extreme footwear. Manning set up a miniature photo studio on the loading dock in the Liacouras Center, where students assemble and line up before walking in for the ceremony.
Manning´s "shoe–cam" set–up—marked with a big "#TUgradshoes" sign, the hashtag used for Manning´s project—began to draw a small crowd of students eager to show off their shoes. She took hundreds of portraits, capturing everything from glittering heelless wedges to cherry–red cowboy boots.
"People are going to find a way to individualize what they wear," Manning said, "and Temple graduates never let me down." To view more of Manning´s shoe-cam photos, click here.
