Sophomore Chartel P. Findlater of Bowie, Md., has already sung at the Kennedy Center.

“My mother says I’ve been singing since before I could talk,” she recalls.  Her fifth-grade choral director nominated her for the Prince George’s County Honors Chorus, which performs annually at the Kennedy Center, and she sang with them for seven years.

“I attended a public high school with a performing arts magnet program, and with every voice lesson, concert and recital, my desire to study music intensified.”

A vocal performance major in the Boyer College of Music and Dance, she hopes to someday provide opportunities for underprivileged youth to receive music lessons and be exposed to classical music and musical theater.

To help realize her own career dream of performing abroad, she’s set herself a goal of learning to speak Italian — an essential for an aspiring opera singer.  The best reward of playing Sarah in “Ragtime,” she says, is working with director Peter Reynolds.

“Peter has been incredibly involved, taking the time to help me develop as an actress.  He has the ability to inspire and motivate the cast to execute his vision for the show.”
