“Each of us is a product and we need to know how to market ourselves,” says Marjorie Brody, founder of the communications consulting firm Brody Communications Ltd.

On Oct. 6 at 8:30 a.m. in the Great Court at Mitten Hall, as part of Temple’s sixth annual Women’s Entrepreneurship Conference, Brody will share her expertise on “Marketing Your Magic: How to Get Visibility Within Your Company, Industry and Community.”

Much of what Brody teaches she learned at the School of Communications and Theater. After earning a master of arts in public address in rhetoric at Temple in 1967, for many years Marjorie taught public speaking and interpersonal communications at Bucks County Community College.

She’s also written more than 18 books, including the award-winning Help! Was That a Career Limiting Move? and Career MAGIC: A Woman’s Guide to Reward and Recognition.

In 1988, after realizing she could help others put in practice what she had been teaching, she opened her own firm, where she works with Fortune 500 companies to help employees sharpen their communication skills. Her company offers courses, training and coaching tailored to client needs on topics such as presentation skills, business etiquette, dealing with conflict and behavioral skills.

Now, she has 12 full-time employees and another eight contractors working for her. Her first three clients — GE, Merck and IMS — still use her services.

Next week, she’s bringing her communications wisdom to Temple’s entrepreneurial community and to greater Philadelphia area women entrepreneurs.

“When you’re an entrepreneur, the balance between doing what you’re doing and marketing is critical,” she said. “For many years, even if you have a tangible product, you are the product.

Everywhere you go you have the opportunity to talk about your product.”

The Women’s Entrepreneurship Conference is hosted by Temple’s League for Entrepreneurial Women and sponsored by the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Institute, The Fox School of Business and Management, the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, the School of Communications and Theater and the College of Liberal Arts.
