Cross country added to track program
Temple has added men’s and women’s cross country as varsity athletic programs starting with the 2005 season.
The addition of the two programs brings the University’s total sports sponsorship to 24 teams.
“Temple has done an outstanding job developing its track program, but adding cross country will help attract more distance runners and fill a gap in that area of our program,” said head men’s and women’s track coach Stefanie Scalessa.
Scalessa, who is in her second year at the helm of the Owls track programs, will look to revive two sports that last competed in 1985.
Men’s and women’s cross country were two of eight sports removed from varsity status in 1986 in order to develop an expanded program of activities for all students, including recreational, intramural and club sports.
Temple men’s and women’s cross country will compete at the Division I level starting this year.
Temple also will be a part of the Atlantic 10 Conference in both sports, and participate in the conference championships held at Philadelphia’s Belmont Plateau on Oct. 29.
