$150 million to permanently endow CORE fund

U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah announced Monday, May 2, the launching of a community-based campaign, “Coins for College,” to build a $150 million endowment to permanently fund the College Opportunity Resources for Education (CORE) program.

Temple ranks among the top three institutions — along with Penn State and Community College of Philadelphia — in the number of students receiving CORE scholarships. Some 400 Temple students received about $900,000 in aid during 2004–05, with individual awards ranging from $500 to $3,000.

Temple Senior Vice President Clarence D. Armbrister and Deputy Chief of Staff Tabb Bishop joined Rep. Fattah at Monday’s announcement. Also attending were City Council members Blondell Reynolds-Brown and Juan Ramos and representatives of the School District of Philadelphia, Penn State and Community College of Philadelphia.

CORE Philadelphia is a not-for-profit program that combines funding from the City of Philadelphia and the School District of Philadelphia, providing “last dollar” scholarships to enable Philadelphia high school seniors to pursue higher education opportunities.
