College of Health Professions stresses interdisciplinary health care
Joined by a panel of Temple healthcare professionals, John Powell Sr. (left), age 57, recently shared information about his treatment at Temple for severe burns.
The panel presentation, part of a program sponsored by College of Health Professions’ Interdisciplinary Committee, was designed to illustrate the value of collaboration among health professionals in helping patients recover from injury and illness.
Traditionally, health professions students
have been educated in relative isolation, according to their disciplines.
Temple is working to better educate students according to the real-world approach that, for any one patient, health professionals will work in teams that span a range of disciplines.
Programs like this one help students understand how these teams work together to care for patients such as Powell, who has been treated by occupational, physical and speech therapists.
Students participating in this program — the only program of its kind in the region — can earn points toward a certificate of interdisciplinary competence.
