Athletics field house, green roof garden to be unveiled at Ambler

On Oct. 11, Temple University Ambler will unveil its new Intercollegiate Athletics Field House, located near the baseball and softball fields.

The field house, part of a $4.5 million project, will be more than a place for Owls athletes to call home — above their heads its roof will be host to a living, growing garden.

With the help of a $50,000 grant from PECO, students and teachers of the landscape architecture and horticulture department have built a demonstration rooftop garden, which will allow them to research and study this increasingly popular technology.

Green roofs are a living biological community of plants and microorganisms growing in a lightweight medium that provide an environmentally sound alternative to a traditional roof system. The technology is believed to help reduce the “heat effect” that occurs in cities, and is becoming more common in the United States and around the world.

For more information on the unveiling of Temple’s green roof garden, call 215-283-1306. For more information on Temple University Ambler’s department of landscape architecture and horticulture, call 215-283-1292.

WHEN: Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 10:30 a.m.

WHERE: Ambler Sports Complex, near the baseball and softball fields.
