Light Switch Stickering

February 1st - Completion, 2009

As part of Temple's implementation of the new Energy Conservation Policy student volunteers are going from building to building across campus putting stickers on light switches reminding people to turn the lights off when leaving a room.

In addition to being in accord with Temple's commitment to become carbon neutral, turning off the lights is an easy way to help the university save money in this time of economic belt tightening.

Temple University Libraries has created a new Library Subject Guide on Sustainability
for its Resources page on the main website. A small group of librarians put the Subject Guide together as a starting point for students and faculty with researching
Sustainability related topics.

As the main page of the Guide states, “this guide provides resources for people interested in sustainability, in general, and offers support for teaching, learning and research at Temple University.”

The website includes information on articles, books and even Philadelphia Resources.

On Wednesday, October 21, 2009 Temple University celebrated its second annual Campus Sustainability Day on three campuses: the University’s Main Campus, Health Sciences Campus and Ambler campus. Each held events to promote ways to go green, but each took a different approach.

On Main Campus, the Bell Tower was buzzing with live music and with a green info fair that allowed students, faculty and staff to visit tables staffed by outside participants (green organizations, businesses, government agencies), as well as various Temple student organizations, academic departments, and businesses to learn about green initiatives. The Health Sciences campus provided information on recycling, Bike Temple and conservation through a series of presentations in the Student Faculty Center, Pharmacy School and the New Medical School. At Ambler, students and faculty organized volunteer activities to plant native shrubs in the woodland gardens near campus.

Look out for future Sustainability events taking place on all Temple University campuses.

The Conwell Inn has been a member of the Philagreen Hospitality Association since the first of this year. PGHA encourages and supports hospitality professionals to green its operations.

The Conwell Inn has installed low pressure shower heads in each bathroom, along with motion activated light switches, which has significantly lowered utility bills each month. The Inn uses a linen re-use program that revolves around asking guests to use their bed linens and towels more than once. When guests participate (over 70% of guests do) and re-use their sheets and towels, money is saved in reduced water, energy, labor, detergent, and sheet/towel replacement costs. All of the guest amenities come in bottles and/or boxes composed of 100% post consumer recycled materials and are fully biodegradable. Some of the more basic changes are things such as CFL light bulbs in every room, recycling receptacles in each guest room (as well as our offices) and live plants and flowers throughout the hotel.

The Conwell Inn has been able to make substantial improvements to what it currently works with. More so, with the help of Philagreen’s monthly association meetings, managers, employees and guests are educated on green living. While it is something not many people look for or require when arranging their travel plans, many people find it to be a nice surprise, when they see they are staying at an environmentally conscious hotel.

To contact the Conwell Inn please visit the website at: http://www.conwellinn.com/ or
call at 215-235-6200.

Throughout the 2009-2010 Academic Year, the Office of Sustainability and the Office of Housing and Residential Life will be hosting a poster campaign in the residence halls featuring sustainability tips about ways to live a green life. The posters remind students to turn off lights, recycle products, conserve energy, reuse materials, and make the switch to going green.

Bike Temple is a partnership between Temple University, Fuji Incorporated, Breakaway Bikes, and Neighborhood Bike Works. The program offers all Temple community members a discount on several styles of Fuji bikes. A bike trailer located at 13th St north of Berks St will be providing maintenance and sales of bicycles every Tuesday and Wednesday, starting September 1st.

The Sonia Sanchez community garden started as a community project to bring together long time residents on Carlisle Street with Temple students living in the immediate vicinity. Located at the intersection of Carlisle and Diamond Streets, the community garden is located on a plot adjacent to the Sonia Sanchez Family and Friends mural, a project of the Mural Arts Program. The mural is located in a historically Puerto Rican section of the city and is a celebration of the Puerto Rican poet Sonia Sanchez and the important contribution the Puerto Rican people have had in shaping the fabric of our city and nation.
In the past year the garden has morphed into a sustainable urban garden project. There is on-site rainwater collection as well as solar energy collection. The stored energy (in a locked battery bank inside a small shed) is used to power a water pump that distributes water the entire length of the garden with an irrigation system of soaker hoses. Over the years, many students as well as staff and faculty have put service in the garden to get it to this point.
This year there are plans to expand the garden’s vegetable and herb plots. For more information on the garden or volunteer opportunities please contact John DiMino at jdimino@temple.edu."
