Freshman Seminar

The mission of Freshman Seminar is to assist students in making a successful transition to the University by helping students frame academic and life goals, develop successful study habits, and learn to function as an active member of their community.

Full Description:

Learning for the New Century is a one-credit freshman seminar course designed for students who are interested in gaining a better understanding of the academic and social transitions to college. Topics include: introduction to college, goal setting, major exploration, getting to know your professors, time management, test-taking strategies, career development, and information literacy.

Specialized seminars are offered for students interested in focusing on a specific discipline, theme, and/or professional field.  Examples of specialized sections are: Leadership, Honors, Pre-Health, and Pre-Law.  Seminars are available as part of individual Learning Communities or as separate courses.  Click here to see a 2007 Freshman Seminar sample syllabus.

Please note, when a freshman seminar is linked to a particular Learning Community, students in these communities must also register for the seminar.  [Seminars are also offered in the School of Communications and Theater, and College of Science and Technology.]

Students register for a Freshman Seminar with the assistance of their academic advisor during New Student Orientation in the Summer.
