FULL-LENGTH AND SUMMER INTENSIVE PROGRAMS

Full-length Summer Semester

Participants in the full-length summer semester may choose from a broad range of courses and have the opportunity to study alongside bilingual Japanese students. The TUJ academic calendar is comprised of three semesters; the summer is not a special program for U.S. or international students, but one of the regular academic semesters at TUJ. As a result, U.S. students can expect to take advantage of all of the academic and extracurricular offerings normally found during the academic year. Temple students who successfully complete this program automatically satisfy the World Society (GG) requirement of GenEd.

Courses
All full-length summer semester participants, regardless of major, are strongly urged to enroll in at least one course focusing on Japan or Asia, and in a Japanese language course. Japanese language is offered at all levels, beginning through advanced. Participants may choose the remainder of their courses from a variety of electives, mainly at the 2000-level or above. All students choose three to four courses from the Summer 2012 Course Schedule for a total of 9 to 13 credit hours. Note: Students in the full-length summer semester may opt to enroll in one of the summer intensive courses (see below; the intensive courses are also noted as such on the course schedule); students who choose to do this will take their other 2-3 courses from the regular full-length summer semester offerings.

Summer Intensive

TUJ is offering three intensive courses on Japanese current events, popular culture, and language in summer 2012. Participants in the summer intensive program will enroll in two of the three courses offered. Of particular interest, the course “Rebuilding Japan” will examine the effects of the March 11, 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake on Japanese society. Students will be asked to identify their two course choices at the time of application to the program. Temple students who successfully complete this program automatically satisfy the World Society (GG) requirement of GenEd.

Summer Intensive Courses

  • Asian Studies 2000 | Special Topics in Asian Studies I: Rebuilding Japan: Social and Political Implications of the Great Tohoku Earthquake, Tsunami and Fukushima Nuclear Crisis on Japanese Society (3 credits) Cross-listed with Sociology 2130 (3 credits).

  • Asian Studies 3000 | Special Topics in Asian Studies II: Japanese Popular Culture (3 credits)

Participants in the summer intensive are required to take 6 credits.

*Participants in the full-length summer semester are required to take a minimum of 9 credits; the maximum number of credits is 13.

**Per university policy, Temple students who are considered “upper division” are charged additional tuition per credit in the summer (Pennsylvania Residents: additional $7 per credit; Non-Pennsylvania Residents: additional $41 per credit).

“Upper division” is defined as an undergraduate student with a minimum of 60 earned credits, regardless of how obtained. This policy does not affect non-Temple students.

Some courses carry fees which range from approximately $60-$175 per course. Students pay these fees in Japan.

In addition to the items listed above, students should budget money for personal health insurance, any travel outside of Tokyo, and any other personal expenses.

We recommend that students follow the exchange rate prior to and during their summer abroad, either through the newspaper or a currency exchange web site (such as www.oanda.com).
