Study Abroad Program OVERVIEW
- Semester, academic year and summer programs for U.S. undergraduates
- Study abroad students take classes alongside degree-seeking Japanese students, as well as other degree-seeking international students from over 60 countries
- Courses include Japanese language at all levels, for native and non-native speakers, and upper-level courses in American studies; anthropology; art history; art; Asian studies; broadcasting, telecommunications and mass media; economics; film and media arts; history; international business studies; journalism; political science and psychology
- Instruction is in English, with the exception of language courses
- Small class sizes (21 students on average) facilitate lively discussions and allow professors to work closely with students to achieve their academic objectives
- Internship opportunities are available to all students; in many cases Japanese language skills are required
About Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ)

- Enrollment of approximately 3,390 students (821 degree-seeking undergraduates; 75 study abroad undergraduates per semester; 411 graduate students; 2,128 in English preparation, continuing education or corporate education programs)
- 42% of undergraduate students are Japanese; the remaining 58% come from over 60 countries around the world
- 185 faculty members from Japan, the U.S. and other countries around the world
- Undergraduate degrees with majors in art, Asian studies, communications, economics, general studies, international affairs, international business studies, Japanese language, political science and psychological studies
- At the graduate level, TUJ offers an MBA, a Master of Science in Education and Doctor of Education in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), and a Master of Laws
- Home to the Institute of Contemporary Asian Studies, which sponsors special programs devoted to Asian contemporary culture and language, a lecture series, and an academic journal
Student Body
TUJ is truly an international university. Within the undergraduate program, approximately 40 percent of the students are Japanese, and the remainder come from over 60 countries around the world. The diversity of the student body contributes to the dynamic exchange of ideas and perspectives across all academic disciplines, and TUJ's integrated educational environment fosters the cross-cultural sophistication necessary to succeed in a global environment. Outside of the classroom, students have ample opportunity for social interaction with their peers through participation in various student organizations, activities and cultural exchange programming.

Location
The TUJ campus occupies several floors within two office buildings in the Minami Azabu and Mita districts in central Tokyo. The area is home to the offices of many international companies and a number of embassies, several of which are in the immediate vicinity of TUJ. Keio University and Meiji Gakuin University are both less than a 10-minute walk away. Shops and restaurants around the campus cater to the embassy and foreign communities in the area. Restaurant options range from traditional Japanese washoku and kaiseki to international cuisine.
TUJ is within easy reach of a number of exciting Tokyo neighborhoods, including Shibuya, an entertainment area popular with young adults. The Imperial Palace, where the emperor resides, the Diet Building (Japanese legislature), and the shopping districts of Ginza and Shinjuku are all less than three miles from campus.
TUJ is accessible by Tokyo’s famous public transportation system from every part of the greater Tokyo metropolitan area and is within walking distance of the Shirokane Takanawa, Mita, and Azabu Juban subway stations and the Tamachi train station on the Yamanote line.
TUJ's housing facilities are located in neighborhoods that are approximately 50 minutes by public transportation from TUJ’s two campus buildings. By living in a different area of the city, students have the opportunity to experience life both in and beyond central Tokyo.

Accreditation
TUJ is officially recognized as a Foreign University, Japan Campus, by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). This status allows TUJ to sponsor student visas, enabling students from the U.S. and other countries to study at the university on either a short-term basis, for one or two semesters, or a long-term basis, such as to complete a full four-year program. Temple University and Temple University, Japan Campus, are accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
TRANSFER OF CREDITS AND TRANSCRIPTS
Students are advised to discuss their academic plans, the selection of courses, applicability of financial aid, and ultimate transfer of credit with their home institution prior to departure. Credits earned on Temple University study abroad programs are recorded on standard Temple University transcripts and may be readily transferred to other institutions. Non-Temple students receive a Temple University username to access their grade report on Temple’s web site following the conclusion of the program. Non-Temple students may also arrange to have an official transcript sent to their home institution free of charge by signing the transcript release authorization on the Home College Approval Form of the application.
