APMSA News

Hi Classmates,

Initially, I wanted to wait to receive the results from all the other schools about the survey on "Board Scores being released" before sending out our results to our class. This was in order to compare them to the other schools and classes at our school but it is taking longer than expected to obtain the results from the other schools. So I decided to let you know what the class of 2011 at TUSPM overall results were. When I receive the results from the other schools I will inform you all. Here they are:

1. 13% of respondents would like to release board scores now while 87% do not want them released now.
2. 46% of respondents never want board scores released while 52% would want them released eventually.
3. 36% of respondents would like to start revamping the test now to eventually release numerical scores while 62% oppose this idea.
4. 54% of respondents would prefer to release student’s % ranking as compared to other test takers rather than numerical scores while 41% oppose this idea.

Those who never want scores released had the general sentiment that this could harm good students who are bad standardized test takers. They also felt that releasing scores could place more importance on this aspect by residencies rather than other qualities of good students such as GPA, class rank, clinical performance on externships, past experiences, grades, personality, research, co-authorship, extra-curricular experience etc. It was also felt that if the is a desire to have boards count more then to raise the pass/fail standards.

Those who would prefer to have % ranking as compared to other test takers felt this would be able to put everyone on the same playing field regardless of what their GPA is at their school since the difficulty of each school is different and one GPA at once school can mean a completely different thing compared to another school.

Some felt that the test needs to be revamped since there has been problems in the past.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask

Sincerely,
Blair Jolley
