Gardasil (the HPV Vaccine)

Gardasil is a vaccine approved in June 2006 for the prevention of some types of genital HPV infection.  It is recommended for women ages 9 to 26.  Ideally it is given to young women, ages 11-13, before they start to have sex.  Other women are considered in a “catch-up” phase.  Having had sex does not prevent you from getting the vaccine, although some studies show it may not have as full or complete a benefit as in women who have not yet had sex.  The vaccine does not treat existing HPV infection.

The vaccine is given in 3 doses divided over 6 months; the second dose is given 2 months after the first dose and the last dose is given 6 months after the first dose.  As with any vaccine administration at Student Health Services, the student must pay the cost of the vaccine on the day of administration.  Student Health Services does not bill insurance companies for vaccine administration.  On the day of your visit, you will be given a receipt that you can send to your insurance company for reimbursement per your insurance policy.  It is the student’s responsibility to determine if her insurance will reimburse for the cost of the vaccine.  Vaccine cost is $125 per dose.
