Welcome Back Week

Each year, the Greater Philadelphia King Day of Service selects a signature site, which serves as the hub of some 600 projects and more than 60,000 volunteers throughout the region. The signature site is the center of media focus, where volunteers will include the mayor and other elected officials, sponsors, community leaders and students from throughout the area.  Dozens of projects and thousands of volunteers will participate at the signature site.

Temple University has agreed to host the 14th annual Greater Philadelphia King Day of Service signature project at the Liacouras Center and other venues on campus. Using an entire arena floor, other rooms and neighboring buildings, we anticipate having the largest series of projects in our history at a signature site. The event takes place on January 19th from 8:30 am to 1 pm.  We would love for you to participate as a volunteer or ambassador for the Temple community.  Please sign-up by January 12 by emailing mlkdos@temple.edu.

Some examples of projects are listed below:

Kid’s Carnival Projects:

  • The American Red Cross will have five stations where youth can learn about disaster preparedness by playing games.
  • The Franklin Institute will hold a series of science demonstrations about how to be better citizens of the planet.
  • Hope WorldWide PA will set up a mini-fitness center where children can play Wii Fitness and Dance Dance Revolution while learning how to lead a healthy and active life.
  • Temple Student Government will do their paint by number mural project with children.

General Signature Site Projects:

  • Donation Drive Sorting Project- King Day of Service staff will need volunteers to help sort all of the donations we collect in our four different drives.
  • Dr. Molefi Asante will hold a workshop where he will train educators on how to incorporate African American content into educational and training programs. He will need two volunteers to assist him with the workshops.
  • Keep Philadelphia Beautiful will hold workshops where participants will learn how to give/implement environmental programming in public schools.
  • Philadelphia READS will hold three projects: Reading Coach Training, Book Sorting project, and Books On Tape project.
