Telephone and Internet Services
Telephone service and high-speed Internet access are offered as amenities to residential students who live in University-owned facilities.
Telephone Service
Every bedroom on campus (except Tyler, Beech Hall) has one telephone jack for each resident. In Beech Hall, residents share one telephone number with their roommate(s). In all locations, students must provide their own true touch-tone telephone, not a pulse telephone. Cordless telephones are not recommended.
Using the University telephone service, students are able to do the following:
-
Receive incoming calls
-
Make free five-digit internal campus calls
-
Make emergency 911 calls
-
Use a prepaid calling card to make local, toll-free, suburban, long-distance, and international calls
Voice mail will be provided to all residential students. To obtain voice mail, log in to the getconnected.temple.edu Web site and click on the box indicating voice mail is desired. You will receive a confirmation e-mail acknowledging your request. This confirmation message includes instructions on how to initialize your voice mail as well as a temporary password that you will need for this process.
Note that the University does not publish a telephone directory for students. You do have the option, however, to include your telephone number on Temple University’s Cherry & White Pages Web site. For details, log in to tuportal.temple.edu and select Cherry & White Update.
Also, you can choose to be listed with the Temple University switchboard. By doing this, operators will give out your phone number if requested. To get listed, log in to the getconnected.temple.edu Web site and click on the option to list your number. Note that Temple operators will only give out your phone number if you sign up for this option.
Plugging in your computer and phone
Your phone number, telephone service, and Internet service are directly associated with the bed space you have been assigned. Telephone jacks and Internet ports are specific and unique to each bed space. Students who have been assigned to:
-
Bed spaces 1, 3, and 5 are on the left/front side of the room
-
Bed spaces 2, 4, and 6 are on the right/rear side of the room
In overbooked floor lounges and rooms with unique configurations, telephone jacks/Internet ports are assigned from left to right, beginning with the first jack/port location. Please be sure that you move into your assigned side of the room. Otherwise your telephone service will not work and you may experience problems with your Internet service.
Identifying your phone number
To confirm your telephone number and that you are using the correct jack, plug in your phone and press #*113.

Internet Service
Preparing for Internet service
To access the Internet, you will need to bring your own computer and an Ethernet (RJ-45) cable. A 14-foot cable is usually adequate. In addition, before coming to campus you should perform the following actions on your computer:
-
Remove any file sharing programs and illegally
-
Downloaded files, such as music and/or video files, from your computer,
-
Scan your computer for spyware and adware,
-
Scan your computer for viruses, and
-
Run Windows Update to ensure that you have the latest Windows patches.
Requesting Internet service
In your residence hall room, you should plug one end of the Ethernet (RJ-45) cable into your computer and the other end into the Ethernet port (usually red) associated with your assigned bed space. Then turn on your computer, open Internet Explorer, and go to the getconnected.temple.edu Web site. On the site, click on the “Request Internet Service” option and follow the prompts.
As part of the activation process, you will be prompted to install Temple’s corporate version of Symantec AntiVirus and Sygate Security personal firewall software. This requirement ensures the safety of your computer on Temple University’s network. The software is provided at no charge and will be part of the setup process when you arrive on campus. Please note that before installing these programs, you will need to uninstall your existing anti-virus and personal firewall software.
