The MS requires 40 s.h. of coursework. Within the MS degree students may choose one
of two concentrations:

  1. Media, Government, and Social Policy

(including nonprofits, activism, media and social change). This concentration focuses on strategic management skills for those who work through media to create or influence social policy. These professionals may work in non-profit institutions, activist organizations, state or national government agencies, or policy-analysis and advocacy organizations.

For example, students who undertake this concentration may be working in areas such as health-care policy, race and minority issues, women’s issues, family advocacy (from child care to aging issues), education policy, equity in access to technology, and public history and cultural programs.

  2. Strategic and Corporate Communication Management

(primarily public relations, with some exposure to integrated marketing communications and advertising). This concentration focuses on strategic skills needed to manage communications for organizations in the corporate, nonprofit, and governmental areas.

Students who undertake this concentration may be interested in general public relations management or may specialize in fields that include issues and crisis management, advocacy, international public relations, multimedia public relations, or financial communication/investor relations.

Neither of these concentrations excludes the other. For example, both concentrations share concerns with the impact of telecommunications, global communication, and many other issues. The two concentrations mainly help to define specific career segments in which students will want to take a heavier load of certain types of relevant courses.
