StOC offers an active Internship

Program Purpose of the Internship Program
The STOC internship is intended to give students academic credit for industry experience. Internships are one of the most important ways for students to apply what they have learned in the transition from college to career. Almost 80% of students complete an internship by college graduation, and the experience often comprises the "deciding factor" in the decision to hire new college graduates.

Finding Internships
Possible internships are

  • posted regularly to the StOC listserv
[if you are not currently subscribed to this listserv, please contact Diane Johnson]
  • posted on the SCT Internship Database

Internship Program Requirements
The internship requires a minimum of 126 hours of off-campus work during the fall, spring, or summer semesters, and is a three-credit course, requiring 7 or 14 weeks of work. The internship course is offered under StOC 337 (Internship in Public Relations) or StOC 369 (Internship in Public Communication). The internship in Organizational Leadership (StOC 399) is pending approval for Fall 2005; currently, OL majors will register for the internship course more relevant to their positions, as determined by the department. The final grade is based on work journals, a final paper, attendance at meetings, the supervisor's report, and a portfolio of all work created during the experience.

Students are free to solicit internships on their own, but need to get the internship director's approval before they can register for credit. Students are responsible for securing written proof of an internship offer before they can register for credit, and must contact the internship director, Charles Fancher (cfancher@temple.edu), to schedule an appointment to review eligibility and schedule StOC 337 or 369.

Prerequisites for students to receive internship credit:

  1. Completion of three of four StOC core courses
  2. Completion of at least four courses in the student's concentration
  3. A minimum 3.0 GPA in the major courses
(Note: See the Permission Form posted on StOC 337 or 369 on Blackboard for details on how to find this.)

All forms needed for registration are attached. Please review full instructions for registration in the 337/369 syllabus before making an appointment. ALL INTERNSHIP SITE INFORMATION MUST BE TYPED. HANDWRITTEN INFORMATION WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
