After three years of planning this new department, effective July 1, 2004, makes its debut and brings together in a unique program three communication specialties: speech communication, organizational communication, and public relations. All three share a single focus: social influence.
Students who major in StOC study the theory and practice of social influence in one of three concentrations: public relations, organizational leadership, and public communication. In public relations courses students learn how organizations establish productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Organizational leadership courses provide students with an understanding of communication in organizations, both public and private, and foster skills associated with leadership in any organizational setting. Students take courses such as organizational communication, theories of leadership, communication and team building, communication and change, etc. Public communication majors emphasize advocacy, performance, and critical analysis in such courses as public speaking, persuasion, argumentation and debate, and critical analysis of messages.
We take pride in having constructed an integrated curriculum. All students benefit from a common core of courses that provide basic theory and skills vital for all three concentrations. And in addition to taking specialized courses in their concentration, students take advanced courses in the other concentrations.
And we take pride in a faculty that includes scholar/practitioners in their specialties who have been or continue to be executives or consultants in profit and not-for-profit organizations.
Take a few minutes to review our curriculum. I’m confident you will recognize a forward-looking program that meets your basic educational needs as well as specialized needs for careers where communication is vital to success.
