The Social Science Data Library is pleased to present its third annual conference focusing on the issues involved in the integration of qualitative software into qualitative research practice.

The workshops in this conference will help qualitative researchers bridge the gap between theory and practice. These workshops will be useful to both experienced and novice researchers, in part because they focus on the integration of qualitative software into the analytical process, and in part because they raise practical issues. This year, we have added three new courses: Core Principles in Qualitative Research, Conducting Qualitative Interviews and Focus Groups, and Introduction to Mixed Methods Research.

These workshops will take place over three days, from January 11th to 13th, 2012 at Temple University. This year, once again, our we will partner with Research Talk, who will send Ray Maietta and Paul Mihas to present the workshop sessions. Last year, workshop participants were very effusive in their appreciation for the presenters, who are very knowledgeable, responsive to participants, and have decades of experience in the field between them.

This year, we are also opening the workshops to other qualitative researchers in the extended region. One very valuable component of last year's conference was that it gave researchers the opportunity to meet with researchers from many different academic disciplines. The 70+ participants came from fields ranging from business to criminal justice to education, music therapy, public health, and sociology. The networking opportunities this year will be greater and more stimulating and will help researchers make a variety of connections across institutions as well as between disciplines.

Courses include half-day seminars and hands-on work sessions:

  • Core Principles in Qualitative Research
  • Early Stage Qualitative Projects: Data Organization: Inventory, Categorization & Memoing
  • Conducting Qualitative Interviews and Focus Groups
  • Later Stage Qualitative Analysis: Qualitative Questioning: Bridging, Diagramming & Memoing
  • Teaching Qualitative Methods
  • Introduction to Mixed Methods Research
  • Sort & Sift, Think & Shift - A Multidimensional Approach to Qualitative Analysis & Software Use
  • Learning from Mistakes: Grading Qualitative Projects & Evolving Qualitative Skill
  • Data Management, Teamwork and Legitimacy in Qualitative Research
