The Sociology prize is given to a graduating senior whose contributions to the department—both academic and personal—have been outstanding. The award is the result of donations made by the department faculty both current and retired. They decided to endow this award, in order to honor a student in this way.
The Robert K. Merton Award is given to the graduating senior with the highest GPA. It is named for Robert Merton, one of the most famous sociologists of all time. Professor Merton graduated from Temple University and taught for many years at Columbia University. The award was endowed by Temple liberal arts alumnus, Leonard Mellman. Mr. Mellman wanted to name an award for an outstanding liberal arts alumnus, and when he asked which liberal arts alumnus was most outstanding in his/her discipline, he was told Professor Merton.

Please join me in congratulating our four top-notch undergraduate students who organized such a successful career conference Tuesday, March 25th. The team was led by Kendra Butler—who can start a career as an event organizer after this! She was ably assisted by Samantha Curvin, Laura Bauer, and Amanda Arina. The whole office was singing the praises of the organizers and of the spectacular speakers, particularly our former students.
Congratulations and thank you. It was a lot of work I know but it was certainly worth it.
