Social Work Students Temple University Social Work Minor

Temple University recently approved the School of Social Administration´s proposal for a social work minor.

The new minor is a great complement to other majors in that it offers students skills in policy analysis, communication, cultural competence, group dynamics, assessment and intervention as well as an understanding of the importance of social context.

Majors in criminal justice, psychology, education, pharmacy, and other allied disciplines should find it particularly helpful in their job searches and in their later work.

At the completion of a social work minor, students will demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Utilize effective communication skills in their professional work;
  2. Use knowledge of social problems, social programs, and social welfare history to contribute to contemporary social debates;
  3. Appreciate the value of social capital and be able to understand, analyze, influence, and formulate social policies;
  4. Create positive change within organizations and service delivery systems;
  5. Apply theoretical frameworks, supported by empirical evidence, that offer insight into the development and behavior of individuals over the life span as well as into the interactions among individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities;
  6. Act in a culturally competent manner so that individuals from all backgrounds are respected;
  7. Understand the concept of self-awareness, how to facilitate resolutions in group situations, and act in a professional manner in the workplace;
  8. Understand and work to eliminate the forms and mechanisms of oppression and discrimination at all system levels.

Interested students may access courses online or through their college advisor. Some sample programs of study follow. Please note that course 2003 is a prerequisite for 2004 and course 3005 is a prerequisite for 3006.

Social Work Degree Students

The courses are offered at the main campus. Students may register for Summer Session courses in 2008 to begin the Social Work minor.

Seven Courses (28 credit hours)

  • Social policy development in historical, political, and economic context (2003);
  • Social problems and social policy analysis (2004);
  • Theories of human behavior within the context of the social environment (3007);
  • Helping processes across systems of all sizes; (two courses) (3005 & 3006)
  • Verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills (1002);
  • Institutional racism or group dynamics (3008 or 3011).
