The School of Social Work(SSW) is dedicated to societal transformations to eliminate social, political, economic injustices for poor and oppressed populations and to advancing the quality of life for all through:
Education emphasizing the discovery of knowledge, use of critical inquiry, and exertion of professional ethics to guide solution seeking and action taking to effect social change among professional social workers in front-line, supervisory, managerial, and leadership positions.
Research and scholarship to advance applied knowledge and generate evidence based strategies to resolve problems occurring between people and their social environments at local, state, national, and global levels.
Public service to aid the dissemination of knowledge and evidence based strategies.
Responding to the needs of constituents through collaborations and partnerships with communities, agencies, and organizations.

This photo taken on Wedneswday, 11/18/09 of the nine Temple undergraduate students involved with the Harrisburg Capital Semester program. Our 3 BSW students (3 students on the extreme right of the photo) are doing very well and having a great semester. The students attended the Governor´s press conference on the autism census that the state is performing and then met with the Governor in his office.
The Capital semester program has now started recruiting undergraduate students for Fall 2010, we strongly encourage CHPSW students to apply!
Congratulations to Mark Schmitz for the acceptance of his recent manuscript in the American Journal of Psychiatry. This is an outstanding journal with high impact factor. Congratulations to Mark for this wonderful accomplishment.
The paper title is "Does the DSM-IV Clinical Significance Criterion for Major Depression Reduce False Positives? Evidence from the NCS-R" The authors are Wakefield, JC, Schmitz, MF, and Baer, JC.

Congratulations to Dr. Marsha Zibalese-Crawford on having her Abstract entitled "Girls violence in Philadelphia: A Community Assessment" selected for Oral presentation during the 137th APHA Annual Meeting (November 7-11, 2009) in Philadelphia, PA. Her presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 12:30 PM.
Congratulations to Dr. Cheri Carter on receiving a grant to develop an interdisciplinary Gen. Ed HBSE course with a colleague from Tyler School of Art Ms. Tamsen Wojtanowski! Students will be encouraged to explore human behavior in the social environment using photography.

SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK GRADUATE AND MOTHER OF NOTED AUTHOR PASSES AWAY AT AGE 88
Alumna and past Certificate of Honor awardee, Ruth McBride Jordan, BSW ´86, passed away in Ewing, NJ, on January 9, 2010. Mrs. McBride Jordan obtained her degree at the age of 65. She is survived by a host of grand and great-grandchildren, five daughters, and five sons; most notably James McBride, musician/author of New York Times bestseller “The Color of Water: A Black Man´s Tribute to His White Mother”. The book details the remarkable life and struggles of his mother who through two interracial marriages, battled racism and poverty to raise her twelve children during the 1940´s. Social Worker of the Month
Congratulations to Assistant Dean Link Martin, MSW for having been named Social Worker of the Month for the State of Pennsylvania! This is a testament to all of Link Martin´s efforts across the State to educate social workers at the master´s level. Well done Link and congratulations from all of us.

New PhD in Health Ecology
This program is designed for a wide range of health professionals who hold entry level master and clinical doctoral degrees. Students will learn to leverage their own disciplinary knowledge base with those of other related disciplines in order to develop advanced understanding and competence to conduct transdisciplinary research.
