Scholarships


Temple University offers incoming and continuing undergraduate students numerous scholarship opportunities to assist you in financing your education. There are some scholarships that support students from across the university; each school and college offers others specifically for students enrolled in their programs. In most cases, students must be enrolled full-time and seeking a degree in order to qualify for these scholarships. Unless otherwise noted, international students and immigrants are eligible for most scholarships. Please be sure to check with your Temple school or college for additional scholarship opportunities

Opportunities for New Freshmen

 

Temple Scholar Awards

Eligibility: Academic merit scholarships for entering freshmen. Recipients are generally in the top 15% of their high school graduating classes with standardized test scores well above average. Scholarships are renewable for up to four years as long as students maintain a 3.0 grade point average.

Amount: Awards generally range from $1,000 to $10,000 per year.

Application/selection: No separate application is required. Recipients are selected by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions based on credentials submitted with the application for admission, and generally are notified with their acceptance letter. Students who apply to Temple before March 1 have the best opportunity to be selected for Temple Scholar Awards.

 

 Pennsylvania Governor’s School Merit Scholarship

Eligibility: Entering freshmen who are graduates of one of the Pennsylvania Governor’s Schools of Excellence and have scored at least 1050 on the SAT as well as ranking in the top 30% of their graduating class and a 3.2 GPA are eligible.  This scholarship is typically given to strong academic students who may not have been offered other merit scholarships during the admissions review process - it is not a supplemental award.  Scholarships are renewable for up to four years with academic eligibility.

Amount: $2,500 awards (5 offered per year)

Application/selection: No separate application is required. Students must apply to Temple before March 1st. Recipients are selected by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions based on credentials submitted with the application for admission. All interested candidates should include their certificate of completion with their application materials.

 

Science Fair Scholarships

Eligibility: Winners in the George Washington Carver (Philadelphia) and Marie Curie (Delaware Valley) annual science fairs, and participants in the International Science and Engineering Fair will be eligible for these Temple scholarships. All awards are renewable for up to four years as long as the students maintain a 3.0 average.

Amount: Three Philadelphia, five regional and five national fair winners who are accepted to and enroll at Temple will receive $1,000 to full tuition.

Application/selection: No separate application is required. Students should apply for admission to the University by March 1. 

 

Camille Cosby Scholarship in Science

Eligibility: Entering freshmen who graduated from Simon Gratz, Germantown, Central or Girls High School (all in Philadelphia), who intend to major in one of the natural sciences, and who have demonstrated financial need will be considered.

Amount: One $2,400 tuition award, renewable for one year with the stipulation that a 3.0 GPA is maintained.

Application/selection: No separate application is required. The recipient is selected by the University’s Cosby Scholarship Committee of the Provost’s office, based on nominations from the high schools.  

 

Bill Bernardo Scholarship in Physical Education

Eligibility: Entering freshmen that are graduates of Germantown High School (Philadelphia) who plan to major in Kinesiology.

Amount: One full tuition scholarship, renewable for up to four years as long as the student maintains a 3.0 average.

Application/selection: No separate application is required. One award is made every four years. The recipient is selected by the University’s Cosby Scholarship Committee of the Provost’s office.

 

Mario D. Fantini Scholarship in Education

Eligibility: Entering freshmen that are graduates of South Philadelphia High School who plan a career in education. The award is renewable for up to four years, with the stipulation that the student maintains a 3.0 GPA.

Amount: One new full tuition scholarship awarded every two years.

Application/selection: No separate application is required. The recipient is selected by the University’s Cosby Scholarship Committee of the Provost’s office.

 

Athletic Scholarships

Eligibility: Participants in all varsity sports will be considered for scholarships. The University and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) determine the requirements and standards.

Amount: Full and partial tuition scholarships, plus room and board and book allowances, are available.

Application/selection: The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics identifies and recruits students and selects scholarship recipients from among those who are admissible to the University.

 

 US Military Scholarships

 

ARMY ROTC:

Eligibility: U.S. citizens who are high school graduates (or equivalent), can pass the physical examination for participation in ROTC, and have at least a 2.5 grade point average and 920 on the SAT are eligible for these two (sophomores), three (freshmen), or four-year (for entering students) scholarships.

Amount:Full tuitionand fees scholarships (resident or nonresident rate) plus an annual stipend ranging from $3,000 to $5,000and $450 per semester for books.

Application/selection: Students interested in four-year awards must apply by December 1st of the year before they intend to enter the University. Finalists will be selected and interviewed and winners will be notified by June 1. Two- and three-year scholarship applicants begin in January, with notifications sent in May. AIR FORCE ROTC:

Eligibility: U.S. citizens who are high school graduates (or equivalent), can pass the physical examination for participation in ROTC, and have at least a 2.5 grade point average and 1100 on the SAT are eligible for these two (sophomores), three (freshman), or four-year (for entering students) scholarships

Amount: Tuition scholarships are for $9,000, $15,000, or full tuition plus an annual stipend of $3,000 and $255 per semester for books.  Four year scholarship winners are also eligible to receive a $2,500 payment for room and board.

Application/selection: Students interest in four-year awards must apply by December 1 of the year before they intend to enter the University. Applicants will be interviewed and winners will be notified by June 1.  Two and three year scholarship applicants begin in January, with notifications sent in May.  For more information about Air Force Scholarships at Temple University, call 610.660.3190 or visit the regional Air Force ROTC website.  

COAST GUARD COLLEGE STUDENT PRE-COMMISSIONING INITIATIVE (CSPI):

Eligibility: U.S. citizens who have at least 60 college credits by the end of their sophomore year, can pass the physical examination for entrance into the military, have at least a 2.5 grade point average and a score of at least a 1000 on the SAT, 1100 on the SAT I, 23 on the ACT, or 110 on the ASVAB GT are eligible to apply.

Amount: Full tuition (both resident and  non-resident), books and fees are paid for one to two years plus a monthly salary of $2,000 with monthly allowances for housing, food and uniforms of about $1,000.  CSPI members are considered active duty military and receive free medical and dental insurance, life insurance and 30 days paid vacation per year.

Application/selection: Students interested in one or two year awards should apply during their sophomore or junior years as early as possible to participate in the next academic year (the deadline to submit a CSPI package is February 1rst of the preceding academic year but putting together a complete package will take at least 1-2 months).  The Coast Guard is highly selective of its officer candidates and applicants will undergo a physical, write a personal essay and be interviewed by a group of Coast Guard officers as part of their application process.  The applicants selected will be notified at the end of the spring semester. Those accepted will go through basic training at Cape May NJ during the summer before their first academic year in the program and will attend officer candidacy school after graduating from Temple. Diamond Bands Scholarships

Eligibility: Qualified students enrolled in any Temple school or college may become a member of one of the University’s four bands and be considered for scholarships.

Amount: The number and amount of the awards (generally ranging from $500-$2000) varies based on students’ participation and musicianship.

Application/selection: The College of Music selects participants in the Diamond Bands and awards the scholarships. Interested students should contact the Director of Athletic Bands, Room 220 Presser Hall, or call (215) 204-8321.

Opportunities For Continuing Students

 

Junior Scholarships

Eligibility: Students who have earned from 60-75 credits, have demonstrated high academic achievement, and are not receiving any other University scholarships will be considered for these awards. Awards are given for up to two years.

Amount:
Twenty-five $1,000 awards

Application/selection:
The Provost selects at least two students from each school/college with the highest GPA each spring.  

 

Dee Martino Scholarship

Eligibility: Students who will be juniors or seniors, (earned 60+ credits), have a minimum 3.0 GPA and are working their way through college. Awards are for one year and renewable at the discretion of the awarding committee.

Amount: $1,000 per year. One award per year.

Application/selection: Applications may be obtained in the Office of Student Financial Services and have a submission deadline of March 1st of each year. The Dee Martino Scholarship Committee will select the recipient.

 

Camille and Bill Cosby Scholarship in Science

Eligibility: Juniors majoring in the natural sciences with demonstrated financial need. The scholarship will continue for a second and final year if the student maintains a 3.0 grade point average.

Amount: Two $3,500 awards.

Application/selection: Applications can be obtained in the Natural Sciences Department offices starting in late February; they are due (with one letter of recommendation) on or before May 3rd each year.  The selection is made in early June by the Cosby Scholarship Committee of the Provost's office.

 

Adeline and Marvin Wachman Scholarship Fund

Eligibility: This fund was created to award a current freshman and sophomore who possess high academic achievement, significant participation and promise of leadership in co-curricular activities at Temple University. The third scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman that will be selected by the Admissions Office.

Amount: Three awards of $1,500 each.

Application/selection: Interested students should complete a Memorial Award application available online at www.temple.edu/assistance ,through Student Financial Services or the Student Assistance Center. The application deadline (usually in February) is indicated each year on the Student Assistance Center website.

Filling out one Memorial application form enters your application for all six of these scholarships (Adeline and Marvin Wachman Scholarship, Jerry Zaslow Award, Joel M. Schafer Award, Sol Feinston Award, & Dorothy A. Seegers Award and Whittaker Award).

 

Jerry Zaslow Memorial Award

Eligibility: Presented to any student, regardless of class status, who has demonstrated high academic achievement as well as well rounded activity within the University and the community.

Amount: One $350 award.

Application/selection: Interested students should complete a Memorial Award application available online at www.temple.edu/assistance ,through Student Financial Services or the Student Assistance Center. The application deadline is (usually in February) indicated each year on the Student Assistance Center website.

Joel M. Schafer Award

Eligibility: Presented to an individual who is affiliated with Temple University and demonstrates financial need and a commitment to a better society for all people. This student, whether a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior, should personify a social consciousness through action.

 Amount: One $500 award.

Application/selection: Interested students should complete a Memorial Award application available online at www.temple.edu/assistance ,through Student Financial Services or the Student Assistance Center. The application deadline (usually in February) is indicated each year on the Student Assistance Center website.

Sol Feinstone Award

Eligibility: The recipient of this award is honored for their participation in, leadership of, or personal accomplishment of constructive social and/or educational change within or outside the University community. This award is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Amount: Three awards at $500 each.

Application/selection: Interested students should complete a Memorial Award application available online at www.temple.edu/assistance ,through Student Financial Services or the Student Assistance Center. The application deadline (usually in February) is indicated each year on the Student Assistance Center website.

Dorothy A. Seegers Memorial Award

Eligibility: Awarded annually in honor of Dorothy A. Seegers, who made significant contributions to Temple University from 1943 through 1979 as a student and administrator. The award is given to a full-time graduating senior who has demonstrated a concern for others and has shown dedication and loyalty to Temple University.

Amount: One $500 award.

Application/selection: Interested students should complete a Memorial Award application available online at www.temple.edu/assistance ,through Student Financial Services or the Student Assistance Center. The application deadline (usually in February) is indicated each year on the Student Assistance Center website.

Whittaker Award

Eligibility: Awarded annually in honor of Raymond Whittaker, the director of Student Activities who helped Lewis Katz and Bill Cosby establish an entertainment and lecture series for students in the early 1960's. This award is given to a full-time student who has demonstrated innovative and entrepreneurial leadership in furthering student activities to benefit students and the community.

Amount: 1 award at $6,000 each.

Application/selection: Interested students should complete a Memorial Award application available online at www.temple.edu/assistance ,through Student Financial Services or the Student Assistance Center. The application deadline (usually in February) is indicated each year on the Student Assistance Center website.

W.W. Smith Charitable Trust Scholarship

Eligibility: Continuing students who have demonstrated academic achievement (minimum 2.75 grade point average) and financial need are eligible for these annual awards.

Amount: $1,000 per semester. Sixty awards have been granted annually. Renewable for eligible students.

Application/selection: Students must fill out a Supplemental Academic Scholarship for Undergraduate Students Application by May 1st of each year. (This must be done each year in order to have the scholarship renewed). The application includes a brief essay explaining the student's educational goals and financial barriers to achieving them. The Supplemental Academic Scholarship Committee of the Russell Conwell Center selects recipients.

Amount: $1,000 per semester. Three awards granted annually.

Application/selection: Students must fill out a Supplemental Academic Scholarship for Undergraduate Students Application by May 1st of each year. (This must be done each year in order to have the scholarship renewed). The application includes a brief essay explaining the student's educational goals and financial barriers to achieving them. Amount: $1,000 per semester. Two awards granted annually.

(This must be done each year in order to have the scholarship renewed).  The application includes a brief essay explaining the student's educational goals and financial barriers to achieving them. NOTE: You will be eligible for preference for an award from the Elmer Roe Deaver Fund if you are related to a former employee of the Quaker City Life Insurance Company (e.g. "My grandfather was an employee"). If so, please mark your Application form as indicated.

Special Opportunities For Students with Disabilities

 

Charlotte Newcombe Scholarship Fund

Eligibility: Permanently disabled, matriculated undergraduate and graduate students with demonstrated financial need are eligible for awards. Continuing students must have at least a 2.0 grade point average.

Amount: Awards vary, with the average being about $450 per semester.

Application/selection: Interested students on any Temple campus should apply to   Disability Resources and Services, 100 Ritter Annex, (215) 204-1280, by the first Friday of every semester. (TTY 215-204-1786)  Disability Resources and Services has a link to the Newcombe Scholarship online at their website.

 

Julia Erling Indahl Scholarship Fund

Eligibility: Blind students, matriculated or non-matriculated, are eligible for these awards.

Amount: Awards vary, with the average being about $300 per semester.

Application/selection: Interested students on any Temple campus should apply to   Disability Resources and Services, 100 Ritter Annex, (215) 204-1280, at any time.

 

Bertha Pasternak Feldman Award

Eligibility: Any graduates of the Widener School who demonstrate hard work and determination are eligible for consideration for this award.

Amount: One $400 award per year.

Application/selection: Interested students on any Temple campus should apply to Disability Resources and Services, 100 Ritter Annex, (215) 204-1280, at any time.
