Community Relations Assistant

Summary

This is a Work-Study position that is equivalent to an entry-level job providing office and other support for a community development program. This position supports implementation of community self-help programs designed to improve economic, family and social condition in the West Philadelphia community.   This position also provides the opportunity to be visible to business leaders, legislators and non-profit organizations.  Supervision will be provided by a senior staff person as well as the volunteer co-chairs of the Economic Development Committee.

Job Description: Women In Transition (WIT) provides empowerment counseling, referrals and advocacy to women in Philadelphia who are endangered by domestic violence and/or substance abuse. Our programs help women make positive changes in their lives, actualize their potential, and build lives for themselves and their children that are free of violence and free from addictions to drugs and alcohol. In order to make our services accessible to parents with young children, WIT offers on-site Playcare for children while their mothers or caretakers are in group or individual counseling sessions. Playcare Workers come in to WIT’s office at least one day a week during business hours to play with and coordinate activities for children who need supervision. The hours of greatest need for Playcare Workers are 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m during Monday through Thursday, but we are also sometimes in need of afternoon workers.

Salary: $8/hour

Job Description:

The PEACe project is transforming public education by making the "real world" the classroom and making the needs and various interests of our students primary. By working with us you have the oppportunity to contribute first hand to this project by helping to build our program into a sustainable model for alternative education here in Philadelphia.  It is also ideal for students interested in pursuing a career in educaion.

The PEACE Project is seeking general assistants (undergraduate and graduate students) to work with us in a variety of capacities.  Some tutor students, others support our staff through administrative tasks. Some lead basketball games, others problem-solve computer issues. Many things are possible and we encourage you to both serve our needs as well as propose your own ideas.

Length of Commitiment: At least one semester (Fall 2007) with the ability to return for the Spring semester.

 

There are four available shifts:

8:00 AM - 10:00 AM

10:00 AM - Noon

Noon - 3:00 PM

3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Training will be provided

Qualifications: The idea candidate will accept the challenge to learn new things and keep an open mind about the namesake of our school, our students/families/staff and our unique educational philosophy. The tutors will provide individual and small group tutoring to students at the John F. Street Community Center. Assist students in improving academic achievement by meeting with them on a regular basis to address individual tutoring plans, clarify learning issues and work on study skills. Text Box:  Discovery Camp is a summer day camp held at The Franklin Institute Science Museum.  Children ages 6-13 are able to come to The Franklin Institute and participate in hands-on activities, visit exhibits & theaters, enjoy presentations by guest scientists and other professionals, and continue the science explorations they begin at TFI on field trips related to the theme of the session.   There are four two-week sessions and 2 one-week session beginning in mid-June through mid August.  Each session of camp includes explorations on a different science theme.

For the fall and spring semesters, 3-5 office assistants are needed to: assist in preparing curriculum materials and lesson plans for children ages 6-13.  Must be self-directed, punctual, reliable, and have strong computer skills.

The office assistant should have an education and/ or science background, enjoy research and writing, be available to work at least 5-10 hours each week, Monday-Friday, between 9AM & 5PM, and have excellent computer skills.  Must be a PA resident!

HOMESCHOOL INTERNS

The Homeschool Workshops Series includes at least 5 themed series throughout the year.  These programs require interns who can work 5-10 hours each week, including every Thursday each week while the series is running, from 12PM to 4PM.   The Homeschool intern will be a Science or Education major who enjoys research and has some prior experience working with children in a formal or informal learning environment.  Curriculum development experience preferred, but not required.

The following is a sampling of the many duties that the intern may be called upon to perform.

Program Development - including library research, photocopying of materials for students and instructors, performing trial experiments to assess the value of potential student activities.

Material Preparation - generating activity materials lists, verifying availability of supplies, and preparation of workshop materials for classrooms

Instruction - assisting classroom instructors or guest facilitators with lessons and presentations

Phone Responsibilities - returning informational calls and taking messages

Inventory - keeping accurate inventory of activity supplies, keeping supplies neatly organized and readily accessible as needed, order supplies as needed

Production of Printed Materials - helping with the data input and photocopying materials to be distributed to students and parents
