Approval of Minutes:

The minutes of April 26th were approved.

President LaFollette’s Report:

President Paul LaFollette said that he did not have much to report.

Various possible motions were discussed regarding working with the administrators during the coming summer.

Meeting during the summer was discussed; his feeling being that this will be particularly important with the anticipated budget cuts.

Resolved: that the FSSC expresses its determination to remain involved in solutions regarding the budget through the summer and the FSSC will make itself available to meet during the summer with the president, the provost and the Faculty Senate Budget Review Committee, in order to do so.

The motion passed unanimously.

Resolved: that the FSSC strongly urges, that all searches for faculty be suspended, except for those few positions that are truly essential.

The motion passed unanimously.

President LaFollette discussed procedures for the University Senate Meeting taking place tomorrow. His suggestion is to use three different colored cards to designate the status of the individuals so that it can easily be determined who can vote on which amendments.

According to President LaFollette, the only controversial amendment will be:

Resolved: that the only people who are ex-officio members, beginning in the fall, will be the president and provost.

President LaFollette expects the first and second amendments to pass with great enthusiasm. Then an electronic ballot will go out. He suggests that the ballot be in two parts – one with the controversial items and the other with the “sure to pass” housekeeping items.

Resolved: that the FSSC endorses the following motions: 1) clarifying the definition of ex-officio members, 2) the proposed amendment to limit ex-officio members to the president and the provost, and 3) the proposed amendment to include librarians in the membership of the senate.

The motion passed.

Vice-President’s Report:

Vice President Joan Shapiro brought forth the two candidates that have applied to be members of the GEEC. Professors Mary Anne Gaffney and Thomas Wright were approved to be new members of the GEEC.

One senator raised a concern that not enough members of the GEEC are from CLA although the majority of courses in Gen Ed are given by CLA.

New Business:

A motion was passed to congratulate Secretary Roberta Sloan on her new position.

Vice-President Joan Shapiro passed out gifts to Senator Luke Kahlich, Secretary Roberta Sloan, President Paul LaFollette, Faculty Senate Coordinator, Cheryl Mack, and gave Cheryl Mack gifts for the two Faculty Senate student workers. President LaFollette presented a gift to Vice-President Joan Shapiro. These gifts were given in recognition of these individuals’ service.

The issue of attendance at FSSC meetings was brought up. It was suggested that the collegial assemblies of the schools and colleges be made aware if their representative has missed three meetings in a row.

One senator pointed out that many faculty members do not realize that they are faculty senators if they are full-time faculty, tenure-track faculty and NTT’s who have been at Temple for three years.

President LaFollette said he will send out a memorandum to that effect.

Senator Jackson thanked everyone for coming to the reception recognizing the service of the FSSC members and the heads of the Collegial Assemblies. He said that this reception will become an annual affair.

Adjournment:

The meeting was adjourned 2:25 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Roberta Sloan, Ph.D.
Faculty Senate Secretary
