Representative Faculty Senate

Tuesday, March 20, 2007

1. Call to Order:

The meeting was called to order at 1:50 PM by President Evans.

2. President’s Report:

The results from the voting on changing the membership requirements were announced. There were 276 votes case. 171 voted to accept NTT faculty, 104 against. The vote for imposing a 5 year waiting period was 55 for the waiting period, 110 against. The vote to add librarians was 148 for, 123 opposed. With these results, it was announced that the constitution would be changed, effective in the autumn of 2007, to admit NTT faculty and librarians. [It was subsequently noted that changes to the constitution require a 2/3 majority and that these changes had, in fact, NOT carried.]

We were reminded of the upcoming investiture celebration.

Evans attended the Pennsylvania House and Senate Appropriations committee meetings. The presidents of the State and State Related schools were told that we might not get any increases beyond inflation this year. The legislators were also very interested in facilitating transfer between state schools, and in improving the time to graduation statistics.

President Hart has received all of our comments on the various candidates for Provost. She has begun negotiations with one candidate.

3. Vice-President’s Report:

Turner discussed the upcoming election for officers and elected committees. The ballot will appear sometime in mid-April. The date of March 30 was given as the deadline for nominatingofficers and committee members. Nominees must agree to their nomination, and must provide appropriate documents to Turner by that date.

4. Old Business:

Halbert gave a short report from the GEEC. She showed one of the videos she has prepared for the Gen Ed web page. She asks us to encourage our students to visit the web site and provide feedback to the GEEC.

The GEEC is ready to consider new course proposals. It also continues to work on various implementation problems/details such as transfer credit, waivers, and so on.

5. New Business:

Joyce Lindorff reported from the Committee on the Status of Women. They have been the difficulties our female faculty are facing with respect to compensation, apparatus, teaching assignments, space, and other resources. There clearly are problems at Temple. There is serious under-representation in some departments, and many wide gaps in salary.

An earlier study in 2003 showed major gaps in three colleges. These have increased in the past 4 years. The committee is planning further study. They recently met with Dr. Hart and the FSSC to discuss these same issues.

6. Adjournment:

The meeting was adjourned at 2:30 PM

Respectfully submitted,

Paul S. LaFollette, Jr.

Secretary
