Approval of Minutes from 10/19/10:

The minutes of November 2nd and October 29th will be re-revised for consideration at the next meeting.

Guests – Senior Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Education - Kenneth Blank, and Associate Dean of the Graduate School, Zebulon Kendrick

President LaFollette welcomed Senior Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Education, Kenneth Blank, and Associate Dean of the Graduate School, Zebulon Kendrick.

VP Blank has been visiting various departments and discovering the types of research being done.  He plans to visit all the departments at Temple University. He feels that outstanding work is being done and the challenge is getting the word out. He stated we need to change this with all of our external stakeholders, representatives, and the industries in the area.  He said that there is a need to create more relationships that open possibilities.  VP Blank feels that we can create large interdisciplinary groups. The major effort will be to put together groups of faculty to approach subjects with varying perspectives.  He wants to know what ideas the faculty has about large research efforts that might lead to excellent outcomes both on and off campus. VP Blank is looking at large policies on campus having to do with research and graduate studies.

It was mentioned that there is some great research already going on, and that it would be good to focus on what is already going on as well developing new research initiatives.

It was brought up that the Temple Website is seriously out of date and VP Blank agreed.  This is being addressed.  He feels that his website should reflect what is really happening.

An FSSC member suggested that the website could be used to publicize the books being written and published by Temple Faculty Authors.  VP Blank agreed.  He stated that he wants his office to be attuned to faculty needs.

A member voiced his concern that he feels that arts activities are not getting the appropriate attention that other types of more traditional research and scholarship are receiving.  VP Blank agreed with those comments. He believes that the performing arts have a place “at the table as an equal partner.”

President LaFollette thanked VP Blank and Associate Dean, Kendrick for the presentation.

President’s Report

The retreat will be on November 17 at noon, at Center City.  Transportation will be provided. President LaFollette requested that if members have items they wish discussed, they should let him know.  Subjects raised for discussion included sustainability, green buildings, parking, the 20/20 plan and UTPAC procedures.

Vice-President’s Report

Vice President Shapiro said that the EPPC and the Personnel Committee each need one more member.

Past President Karen Turner stated that TAUP has given her a list of members for the Faculty Senate/TAUP Liaison Committee, and that she needed two more members from the Faculty Senate.  A member of the FSSC volunteered to serve.

CATA still needs five more committee members to complete its membership.
