2006-2007
Stories shared among faculty of color invoked this commission. The anecdotes revealed widespread dissatisfaction. A common refrain decried a lack of support for research and teaching endeavors. Hence our committee seeks to serve as a watchdog group. We aim to measure and monitor the employment, compensation, and advancement of faculty of color.
We point to the roll of “Great Teachers” as a sign of an institutional failure to recognize the accomplishments of faculty members from traditionally underrepresented national minorities. The list lacks names from the minority community. It follows that the university has failed to hire qualified candidates or it has failed to honor those hired. In either case, there exists a problem that warrants attention.
We hope to discuss such issues with relevant offices across campus. Our committee considers it important to establish dialogues with interested parties including Rhonda Brown, Vice President of Multicultural Affairs; Sandra Foehl, Vice President for Affirmative Action, Office of Multicultural Affairs; and Art Hochner, Chief Negotiator, TAUP. We aim to initiate talks with deans about frustration expressed by faculty of color related to merit and leaves. Moreover, we plan to share our findings with the incoming provost Lisa Staiano-Coico in order to enlist her help in producing a study of the minority faculty experience.
The world of the 21st century calls for a diverse faculty to achieve broad distinction in research and prepare our students for success. With support from the administration, we think that our committee will work to enhance faculty life and enrich the whole university.
