Scholarships Opportunities
The School of Communications and Theater offers several scholarships for academic tuition, internships, study away, and other opportunities. Additional opportunities are available through individual departments. Scholarship recipients will be contacted directly when selected, and winners' names will then be posted online.
SCT Scholarships
Lew Klein Excellence in the Media Scholarship
Established in honor of Lew Klein, by H.F. “Gerry” and Marguerite Lenfest and Walter and Leonore Annenberg through the Annenberg Foundation. Mr. Klein has been an SCT adjunct faculty professor for more than five decades.
Funding applies to an internship or internship program, independent study project or international study.
Student must be classified as a sophomore, junior or senior to be eligible.
Maximum award $2,500

Philadelphia Club of Advertising Women Endowed Scholarship
Established by the Philadelphia Club of Advertising Women.
Open to SCT students majoring in public relations, advertising, graphic/commercial arts or film making. Student must be classified as a junior to be eligible.
Award amount $2,500

George P. and Martina Jennings Endowed Scholarship Fund
Created in honor and Mr. and Mrs. Jennings by their family.
Open to students in any major for their junior year only.
Maximum award amount $3,000

Michael Buser Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established in memory of Michael Buser '76.
Open to SCT students in any major throughout the School.
Maximum award amount $500

Communications and Theater Scholarship Fund
Established in 1968 by Dean Robert Harwood.
Open to SCT students in any major throughout the School.
Maximum award amount $1,300

Robert Shackleton Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established in memory of Mr. Shackleton, '36, by Dr. and Mrs. Myles Martel.
Open to students majoring in Film and Media Arts; Theater; or Broadcasting, Telecommunications and Mass Media with a preference for those interested in onscreen or public performance. Students must have completed two or more years of undergraduate coursework.
Maximum award amount $2,500

Brenner Scholarship in Communications Fund
Established in 1987 by the Energy Education Advisory Council to provide scholarships to SCT students in any major for their senior year only. Grade point
average of 3.5 or higher required.

MacDonald Scholarship Fund
Established in 2004 by friends and colleagues in honor of John MacDonald upon his
retirement as Executive Director of Temple University Alumni Association after 40
years of service to the University to provide scholarships for out-of-state students
who have financial need and are enrolled in SCT, with preference given to students
who are residents of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Maximum award amount $1,250

External Scholarships
Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia
Several scholarships will be awarded to outstanding undergraduate students studying radio, TV, film production and associated fields. Awards are given to current sophomores and juniors (for use in their junior or senior year) who have demonstrated academic excellence and professional potential. You do not need to be a member of the BPA or its student organization.
Requirements: Awards will be presented April 21, 2010, and recipients must attend an event that day to receive the scholarship. Must be a permanent resident or college student in the Delaware Valley or surrounding area. Must be communications major or involved in related study. Must have GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Maximum award: $1,000

Student Diplomat Essay Competition
NAFSA: Association of International Educators and “Abroad View,” the global education magazine for students, are hosting an essay contest for your chance to become the next Student Diplomat. You are invited to submit a compelling story that articulates how your undergraduate international experience(s) has helped meet the United States’ need to understand global situations and compete in the global arena. Essays should be a minimum of 1,000 words and no more than 1,500 words.
Award amount: $150 and an STA Travel voucher worth $300

The Bernice Anastasia Ximines Smith Scholarship for Undergraduate Students
Claire Smith, columnist with the Philadelphia Inquirer, has granted the Black Women in Sport Foundation a scholarship fund on behalf of her mother, Bernice Anastasia Ximines Smith. Given annually to an outstanding African American woman who is enrolled in the Temple University School of Communications and Theater who exhibits the spirit and accomplishments of Mrs. Smith.
Mrs. Smith was born in New York and raised on the island of Jamaica in the West Indies. She returned to America as a teenager and excelled in academia. She attended Hallahan High School, Temple University and graduated from Morgan State University. Mrs. Smith was one of the first African Americans involved in the U.S. Space program in the 1960s when employed as a chemist and researcher by General Electric of Philadelphia. Open to a sophomore or junior African American woman enrolled in the Temple University School of Communications and Theater.
Award amount: $1,000
