Majors & Minors

The School of Communications & Theater at Temple University has seven majors:
Advertising, Broadcasting, Telecommunications & Mass Media, Communications, Film & Media Arts, Journalism, Strategic & Organizational Communications, and Theater, as well as at present, one minor: Theater.

Majors:

Advertising

The Department of Advertising offers students professionally-oriented courses focused on preparing them for a wide variety of careers, rooted in marketing communications in a media-defined global society.

The Advertising Department consists of three major tracks:

  • Creative – Copywriting or Art Direction
  • Management Track
  • Research Track

Broadcasting, Telecommunications & Mass Media (BTMM)

The Department of Broadcasting, Telecommunications and Mass Media provides students the knowledge and skills to create, analyze and manage media content and institutions responsibly.

The BTMM curriculum is made up of courses in three areas:

  • Media Production & Performance
  • Media Business & Entrepreneurship
  • Media Analysis

Communications (Interdepartmental program)

The Communications Major is designed in the liberal arts tradition to provide students in the School of Communications & Theater a broad exposure to all communications disciplines, as well as allowing for an in-depth focus in more than one area of study.

Film & Media Arts (FMA)

The Film and Media Arts Program focuses on the development of creative and technical skills in film, video, audio, digital media, and new technologies, and the theoretical understanding of media and culture.

FMA consists of three major Sequences:

  • Production Thesis Sequence
  • Media Culture Thesis Sequence
  • General Sequence

Journalism

The curriculum for Journalism is based on developing critical thinking in students for a multimedia, urban journalistic environment. This requires a broad educational background coupled with rigorous professional training.

Strategic & Organizational Communications (StOC)

The Department of Strategic and Organizational Communication educates students in the theory and practice of public communication and leadership, with the primary emphasis on communication and social influence or advocacy.

Theater

The Theater Department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) and is a member of the United Resident Theatre Association (U/RTA). These affiliations characterize it as amongst an elite group of highly recognized Theater Programs.

  • Acting Emphasis
  • Design/Technical/Stage Management Emphasis
  • Directing Emphasis
  • Musical Theater Emphasis

Minor:

Theater

The Theater Minor is designed for those students who have an interest in the Theatrical Arts, but do not wish to pursue Theater as a career. Twenty credit hours of coursework are required.

Notes:

  • Transfer credits are not accepted for credit for the minor in Theater.
  • Students must receive the permission of their adviser before starting this program.
  • Once the minor has been approved, students must follow the academic rules of the Department of Theater for all Theater courses.
  • Minor credit is not given for Theater grades below C.
  • Students must maintain at least a 2.00 grade point average in the minor.
  • Students with an average under 2.00 may not begin the program.
  • Students with Theater averages below 2.0 for more than two semesters may be dropped from the program.
  • Students taking the Theater Minor should collaborate with a Theater Department Advisor in the selection of coursework.

Communications (Interdepartmental) majors can only use Theater 1002 to count towards both the major & the minor.

All other courses applied to the minor cannot be applied towards the Communications Major.

Requirements for the Minor in Theater are as follows:

  • Theater 1002: The Collaborative Art
  • Theater 1096: Introduction To the Theater Process (pre or co-requisite Theater 1002)
  • Theater 1087: Production Practicum (2 semesters)
  • ONE of Theater 3096: Classical Traditions, Theater 3097: Romantic Tradition OR Theater 3051: Modern Directions
  • Three 3 credit Theater electives
