Purchasing Guidelines
The following are suggestions that may be used to guide student purchases of computer hardware and software while enrolled in courses at Temple University's School of Communications and Theater (SCT).
Non-Production Systems
- If you wish to purchase a personal computer for Internet browsing, word processing, single image graphic design, etc., visit the Temple University Shopper's Guide.
Non-Linear Video Editing Systems
- The two primary non-linear video editing systems in use at SCT are Avid Express Pro and Apple Final Cut Pro. Before ordering computer hardware or software, check the manufacturer's site for the minimum system requirements.
Audio Editing System
- The primary audio editing system in use at SCT is DigiDesign Pro Tools LE.
Storage Devices
- For saving small files (text, graphics or individual audio clips) we recommend a USB Flash Drive or CD-R medium.
- If you plan to enroll in an audio or video production course, we recommend that you purchase an external dual Firewire/USB hard drive. A minimum size of 120G is recommended, but the largest dual USB2/Firewire that you can afford is better for production work. You should purchase a drive with a speed of 7200 RPM or higher, and that uses an Oxford 911 or 922 IDE-Firewire bridge board.
- These are recommendations, but many other drives may work just fine. In all cases, verify the return policy in case the drive proves to be unreliable for video editing.
General Information
- Most current Macintosh systems only save to CD-R or DVD-R disks and external Firewire or USB drives if available.
- Most current Windows systems save to CD-R, DVD+R, Zip disks and external Firewire or USB drives if available.
- We DO NOT support VHS-C or Digital 8 video tapes.
- Before purchasing computer hardware or software, always inquire about a manufacturer's educational discount. Not all offer one, but it will not hurt to ask.
