Jim McKairnes, Sr. VP of CBS Television Studios, Visits Campus
Jiim McKairnes, a 1982 graduate of Temple University (B.A. Journalism),
and Senior Vice President of Strategic Planning and Development at CBS Television Studios, is visiting campus this week, speaking to students in Journalism and Society and the Future of Television. At CBS Television, Jim is charged with developing comedy-series programming for cable television, as well as overall strategic planning for the studio in both the cable and broadcasts arenas. Temple Alum Named Newspaper Photographer of the Year
Stephen M. Katz was named Newspaper Photographer of the Year by POY International at the National Press Photographer's Association (NPPA) in March 2009. Katz is a staff photographer for The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, VA, where he has worked since 2004. Katz graduated from Temple with a Master of Journalism degree. Read more…

Documentary Photographer Harvey Finkle at Temple
Long-time Philadelphia documentary photographer Harvey Finkle recently visited Prof. Andrew Mendelson's documentary photography class. Finkle is a documentary still photographer who has produced a substantial body of work concerned with social, political and cultural issues. His work has been extensively exhibited and published, including three books entitled, "Urban Nomads," "Still Home: Jews of South Philadelphia" and "Reading." Read more…

 

CNN Photojournalist Bethany Swain Speaks at Temple
CNN photojournalist Bethany Swain spoke to students at Temple University on Tuesday, March 24. Swain has been a photojournalist for CNN for more than five years. She covered the 2008 presidential election, documenting the political conventions and spending 22 days embedded with Gov. Palin’s campaign. Read more…

The Temple Journalism Review studies the Philadelphia-area media landscape, pointing out those who excel at the craft of journalism as well as those who behave dubiously. Internationally Acclaimed Photographer Lori Waselchuk
Lori Waselchuk is a documentary photographer whose work has been published in Time, Life, Newsweek, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, National Journal, USA Today, The Chicago Tribune, The Independent, The Times (London), Der Spiegel and Liberation. In 2004, Waselchuk won the Southern African Gender and Media award for her coverage of war-related sexual violence in Liberia. Read more…

 

Recent Grad Shares Success in TV News, Next Stop: New Orleans
2007 broadcast journalism grad Donnell Jackson returned to campus recently to share his success in the real world with Temple students. After graduation, Jackson took an entry-level position at Philadelphia’s NBC-10, then moved to Winston-Salem’s WXII-TV where he produced award-winning newscasts. Jackson is now moving to WDSU in New Orleans. Read more…

 

Temple Hosts Seminar on Journalism Ethics in the Digital Age
On Thursday, January 29, the Department of Journalism hosted an American Press Institute seminar: Journalism Ethics in the Digital Age. The seminar was a day-long exploration of the challenges in applying ethical standards to the situations that digital journalism presents. Sessions covered journalism and social networks, user-generated content, blogging, and visual journalism in the digital age. Read more…

 

La Nueva Frontera Digital: Multimedia Workshop for Journalists
The National Association of Hispanic Journalists Region III and the Philadelphia Associations of Black Journalists hosted a one-day multimedia/digital journalism conference for journalists on Saturday, January 31 at Temple University. Workshop topics included: backpack journalism, podcasting/vidcasting/live streaming, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Flash, sports journalism online, visual journalism, Spanish language media online, how to produce a video show for the web, new media vs. old media, news uses for social networking, and blogging.
