The Flickering Light is a monthly screening of independent films in Philadelphia's Mt. Airy neighborhood. Each month is organized around a different theme and presents a mix of experimental, documentary and narrative approaches to the theme.


This month's screening, My Father: The Radical, features films by two Temple MFA alumni, Bernadine Mellis (Forest for the Trees) and Naima Lowe (Birthmarks). To read more about the films and the screening series go to http://www.flickeringfilms.com.

Where to Submit: RM 18 Annenberg Hall (Post Production)

Submission Deadline: May 1, 2009


1. Export a full-quality QuickTime file of your movie (in FCP: File-Export-Using QuickTime Conversion). Name your file like this: TITLE OF YOUR WORK_YOUR NAME. Save it to your personal hard drive or flash drive.


2. Drag your File from your hard drive or flash drive onto the green and purple "DS" icon on the desktop called "Drop Diamond Screen Submissions Here." This will add a list of annotations to your file to enable easy sorting.


3. Open your QuickTime File and click on the "Window" menu. Select "Show Movie Properties." This will open a window with information about your movie.


4. Click for a list of Annotations (PDF). This is information that will be stored along with your movie in the QuickTime file. Double-click in the "Value" field next to each annotation and enter your information. If a category does not apply to your movie, leave the default text in place. See below for further information on the copyright field.


5. Get the Diamond Screen Hard Drive from the Post Production attendant and copy your QuickTime file to the "Diamond Screen Submissions" folder.

Screenwriting Senior Project

FMA 4365-4366

Screenwriting Senior Project is a two-semester sequence in which each student writes and polishes a feature-length screenplay. Professor Jeff Rush will teach the first semester and Professor Elisabeth Subrin will teach the second.

Like Senior Projects, students must apply for admission to this sequence in the spring of their junior year. To be eligible, a student must have earned at least a ‘B’ in both Writing I (FMA 2361) and Writing II (FMA 3396). She must have earned a university GPA of at least 3.0 and at least a ‘B’ in all the four courses of the FMA core.

Packets for the 2009-2010 Screenwriting Senior Project are due in the FMA office by 4pm on Fri, April 17th.

Packets must include:
--A filled-out Screenwriting Senior Project Application Form (available in FMA office).
--A proposal for a feature screenplay (no more than two pages).
--A five-page screenwriting sample.

Senior Projects 2009-2010

Deadline to apply: April 15, 2009.


Application packet must include:

  • Senior Project Approval Form (available in FMA office)
  • 1-2 page Approach Statement: a summary of the reasons for producing this project and its importance for you and others
  • Work sample ? include only your strongest work (only 10 mins will be reviewed)

For narrative projects:

  • Script (20-page limit)

For documentary/experimental projects

Project proposal, which must include:

  • ?Story? Overview
  • Visual Treatment
  • Anticipated and/or completed Research
  • Projected Budget

Deliver completed application to:

FMA Office (Room 120) by April 15th, 2009

The Flickering Light is a dynamic new monthly independent film screening series on the first Saturday of each month. The screenings will be held at the Sedgwick Theater, Mt. Airy?s historic art deco theater that has been out of use for several years.


The first program, East Looks West Looks East: A Few Films from the Iranian Diaspora takes place on Saturday March 7th, 2009 at 7pm at 7137 Germantown Ave. The next program, MIXed Up in Philly: The Best of the MIX, New York?s LGBT Experimental Film Festival will take place on Saturday April 4th, 2009 at the same time and location.


The series is founded by Temple alumn Sara Zia Ebrahimi.

MFA alumni Heidi Saman's thesis film, The Maid, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2008. It recently screened at Slamdance Film Festival and the Dubai International Film Festival. It will also screen at the 2009 Washington D.C. independent film festival in March.

FMA alumni Max Margulies and Naoko Masuda have been screening their film "God of Tears" at various festivals around the world.


It has received the award for Best Short Film at the Atlanta Underground Film Festival, Best College Animation at the Bucks Fever Film Festival, and has played at the Rio de Janeiro International Short Film Festival in Brazil and the Washington DC Independent Film Festival. Their other short film "Fish" has also been making the festival rounds, having played at Fantastic Fest 2008 in September. Daniel Kremer’s film A Trip to Swadades was screened at the WildRivers 101 Film Festival in Eureka, California and the Iowa Independent Film Festival. It has been invited to screen at the Fantasporto Film Festival in Portugal, and has been submitted to a great many others, many of which are in Europe. The film picked up a Best Feature Film prize and a quick review in an INDIEwire Magazine article. To see a trailer of the film click here.
