Department of Strategic and Organizational Communication

Both positions provide an opportunity to play leadership roles in a department with undergraduate majors in public communication, public relations, and organizational leadership, and an M.S. program in Communication Management. The department is also part of a schoolwide Ph.D. program in Mass Media and Communication.

Qualifications

The ideal candidates will have demonstrable research interests in one or more of the following areas: global communication, interorganizational relationships, computer-mediated communication and emerging technologies, and organizational and group leadership. All theoretical and methodological perspectives are welcome.

This interdisciplinary program will benefit from faculty whose interests span a variety of fields. Candidates with a track record in external funding are preferred. A Ph.D. is required. Faculty will have the opportunity to teach undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral courses.

Director, Communication Program

Tokyo, Japan

Temple University’s School of Communications and Theater (SCT) seeks to hire a Director for its Communication Program at the university’s branch campus in Tokyo, Japan (TUJ). This includes serving as Coordinator of the undergraduate Communication major and launching and serving as Director of an M.S. in Communication Management.

The Director will be a Temple University appointee, with his/her contract being with TUJ, likely at the rank of either Assistant or Associate Professor (other ranks possible depending on degree and experience). This non-tenure-track appointment is initially for three years, with subsequent three-year or five-year contracts.

Desired Qualifications

Candidates should demonstrate administrative experience in an academic/professional setting as well as excellent teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels. A Ph.D. in communication or in a related discipline is preferred. Significant professional experience in a related field, especially in Japan, is highly desirable. The language of instruction is English; the ability to speak Japanese is helpful but not required.

Administrative and Academic Responsibilities

The Director’s responsibilities will include overseeing the undergraduate major in Communication, including advising students, hiring faculty, scheduling courses, and planning and implementing an expansion of the curriculum. He/she will also be responsible for launching and administering an M.S. in Communication Management, including hiring faculty and recruiting and advising students. He/she will also be expected to teach courses in both programs, to develop relationships with industry leaders, and to support fund-raising for the Communication Program. Administratively, he/she will report to the Associate Dean of TUJ, but will coordinate academic issues with the Department of Strategic and Organizational Communication, the home department in Philadelphia.

Program Description

With an enrollment of 2,980 students and a faculty of 180, TUJ offers BA degrees with majors in American studies, art, Asian studies, business administration, communications, economics, general studies, international affairs, political science, psychological studies, and toursim and hospitality management. TUJ also offers AA degrees, an MBA, a Master of Science in Education and Doctor of Education in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and a Masters of Law. TTUJ is the pre-eminent American university in Japan and the first to be recognized by the Japanese Ministry of Education. With students from over 40 countries, a downtown Tokyo location, an extensive internship program, and widespread contacts in the local and international business communities, TUJ provides students with a unique opportunity to learn both communication theory and practice in a rich multicultural setting.

Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs

Temple University's Department of Film & Media Arts seeks a chair for a department that has recently been externally evaluated “as a nationally and internationally recognized program with a distinct identity of independent filmmaking and a history of producing socially conscious filmmakers.” Film & Media Arts focuses on documentary, new media, and alternative voices in narrative film and video. Temple University, Department of Theater, seeks full-time Costume Designer to teach in an active and growing theater department with both BA and MFA programs in design, starting Fall Semester 2008.  Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in costume design, costume construction, make-up, hair and wigs, drawing and rendering, costume history.  Demonstrated expertise in Scenic Design is highly recommended and the ability to teach Architectural History, Intro to Theater and/or other general theater classes a plus.  Design Costumes or mentor student designers (undergrad and graduate) in a season of six productions.  Position requires an earned MFA, experience teaching in a professional training program, along with professional design experience. Assistant Professor in Multimedia Journalism

The Department of Journalism in the School of Communications and Theater at Temple University has an opening for a tenure-track scholar/teacher with professional experience and one whose research and/or teaching interests address convergence issues and new media and journalism topics. The Ph.D. is preferred, though other applicants may be considered on the basis of professional stature and experience.

The Department of Journalism is more than 75-years-old with 15 full-time faculty members who teach some 800 undergraduate and graduate students in a multimedia, urban journalism curriculum. While its goal is to prepare students for a multimedia professional future, the curriculum includes concentrations in news-editorial, magazine, broadcast, and photojournalism, all of which have online dimensions. Studies areas including history, law, critical issues and ethics also are integral parts of the curriculum. A Master of Journalism program offers professional training to full- and part-time students. The department of Broadcasting, Telecommunications and Mass Media (BTMM) at Temple University invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor beginning fall 2008. This is a tenured/tenure-track faculty position in a department of approximately 800 majors who study audio, video and electronic media production; management of media institutions; and social and psychological functions, processes and effects of media. The department offers a master's degree and contributes to an inter-departmental doctoral program in Mass Media and Communication. BTMM is one of six departments in a large, diverse and dynamic School of Communications and Theater.

We seek an individual who combines scholarly and creative work in ways that address the new challenges and opportunities in digital media environments. Candidates should be qualified to teach introductory and core courses in media institutions and contemporary issues in media, as well as courses related to the candidate's specialty. Expertise and interest in teaching graduate courses in theory or methods will be a plus. Scholars who have experience with multimedia production are particularly encouraged to apply. Tenure Track Position for Assistant Professor

Department of Advertising

Temple University’s School of Communications and Theater has an opening for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Advertising beginning fall 2008. We’re looking for a scholar/ teacher with a strong or promising advertising or allied field research background. The Ph.D. is mandatory, but ABD with a promise of completion by time of hire will also be considered. The scholar/teacher should be prepared to teach introductory and advanced undergraduate advertising courses and be a productive researcher.

The Department was newly formed in 2004 as an autonomous department within the School of Communications and Theater. By way of enrollment, the department is one of the largest such programs in the vibrant and media-centric northeast. The department has a comprehensive undergraduate curriculum in place, which includes four tracks of study: research, copywriting, art direction, and account management/media.
