Temple University’s Department of Film and Media Arts seeks a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor for appointment beginning August, 2009. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience.

Qualifications

We seek a hybrid film/mediamaker, whose work spans traditional film/video and digital and/or alternative media forms, is nationally or internationally recognized, innovative in form and content, and demonstrates awareness of contemporary critical and social media practice.

The candidate should have a secondary expertise in one of the following: theory, screenwriting, new media, along with experience teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate level; and the demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a creative, multi-disciplinary community.

Television Station Manager

Department of Broadcasting, Telecommunications and Mass Media

The department of Broadcasting, Telecommunications and Mass Media (BTMM) at Temple University invites applications for a faculty member who will serve as manager of a new Temple University television station beginning fall 2009. This is a non-tenure-track senior position in a department of approximately 800 majors who study audio, video and electronic media production; management of media institutions; and social and psychological functions, processes and effects of media.

This appointment is for two years and is renewable.

Qualifications

We seek a professional whose background emphasizes broadcast management, with experience in university-based media. The ideal candidate will have experience supervising production of media content, full time professional staff and student workers and will be able to teach in two or more of the following areas: media management, media history, career planning, media production, programming, integrated media.  Applications should include evidence of substantial experience in broadcasting, and higher education teaching materials including course syllabi, teaching evaluations and/or peer reviews of teaching.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and a promising record of scholarship are necessary. A Ph.D. is required.

Qualifications

The selected candidate will teach in area of expertise featuring four curriculum tracks of study and professional application: research, copywriting, art direction, and media and account management. A Ph.D., ABD, or other terminal degree is preferred but not mandatory.

Assistant Professor in Magazine Journalism

The Department of Journalism

The Department of Journalism within the School of Communications and Theater at Temple University seeks candidates for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor rank, to begin in August 2009.

Qualifications

We are seeking a new faculty member who brings professional expertise in magazine publishing, editing and/or design, as well as theoretical expertise in studies areas such as new media, law, ethics, history, and/or media criticism. The successful candidate will be able to provide evidence of teaching experience and a clear agenda for scholarly research. The Ph.D. is preferred, though we also will consider applicants with notable professional experience. Departmental faculty holding the Ph.D. also have the opportunity to participate in the School of Communication and Theater’s doctoral program in Mass Media and Communication.

The goal of Temple’s journalism program is to prepare students for a multimedia professional future with solid training in urban journalism, with particular emphasis on underserved communities. We seek a colleague with a similar commitment and philosophy.

Director, Communication Program

Tokyo, Japan

Temple University’s School of Communications and Theater (SCT) seeks to hire a Director for its Communication Program at the university’s branch campus in Tokyo, Japan (TUJ). This includes serving as Coordinator of the undergraduate Communication major and launching and serving as Director of an M.S. in Communication Management.

The Director will be a Temple University appointee, with his/her contract being with TUJ, likely at the rank of either Assistant or Associate Professor (other ranks possible depending on degree and experience). This non-tenure-track appointment is initially for three years, with subsequent three-year or five-year contracts.

Desired Qualifications

Candidates should demonstrate administrative experience in an academic/professional setting as well as excellent teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels. A Ph.D. in communication or in a related discipline is preferred. Significant professional experience in a related field, especially in Japan, is highly desirable. The language of instruction is English; the ability to speak Japanese is helpful but not required.

Administrative and Academic Responsibilities

The Director’s responsibilities will include overseeing the undergraduate major in Communication, including advising students, hiring faculty, scheduling courses, and planning and implementing an expansion of the curriculum. He/she will also be responsible for launching and administering an M.S. in Communication Management, including hiring faculty and recruiting and advising students. He/she will also be expected to teach courses in both programs, to develop relationships with industry leaders, and to support fund-raising for the Communication Program. Administratively, he/she will report to the Associate Dean of TUJ, but will coordinate academic issues with the Department of Strategic and Organizational Communication, the home department in Philadelphia.

Program Description

With an enrollment of 2,980 students and a faculty of 180, TUJ offers BA degrees with majors in American studies, art, Asian studies, business administration, communications, economics, general studies, international affairs, political science, psychological studies, and toursim and hospitality management. TUJ also offers AA degrees, an MBA, a Master of Science in Education and Doctor of Education in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and a Masters of Law. TTUJ is the pre-eminent American university in Japan and the first to be recognized by the Japanese Ministry of Education. With students from over 40 countries, a downtown Tokyo location, an extensive internship program, and widespread contacts in the local and international business communities, TUJ provides students with a unique opportunity to learn both communication theory and practice in a rich multicultural setting.
