Communications Internships
We are glad that you are considering undertaking an internship with the Communications Program. Our internship program has included a number of media centers such as radio and television stations, major businesses, community services, international organizations, and even an affiliate of the United States Department of Defense!
Although the internship program is not required for graduation in the Major, it is highly recommended. Survey after survey of corporate leaders notes the importance of having an internship. Several students look back at their internship as a vital component of their undergraduate experience.
The ability to function within an organization and to obtain hands on experience are some of the most intriguing aspects of internships. Additionally, internship supervisors-- several of whom are Temple grads who are pleased to continue their association with their alma mater through this innovative program-- find that Temple Communications interns bring a solid education and work ethic into their internship experience.
Students are able to receive up to four credit hours of classwork to count toward their graduation through the Internship Program. The internship manual will explain a great number of policies, standards, and expectations for the Internship Program.
Please feel free to contact the director, Scott Gratson, at 215-204-6434 or sgratson@temple.edu for more information. We are very excited about the possibilities within the Internship Program. We are certain that you'll agree.
Sincerely,
The Faculty, Staff, and Students of
The Communications Program

Student Testimonials
Giavanna Ippolito, Class of '08:
During my senior year, fall semester in 2008 I interned at Philadelphia Magazine as a Circulation intern. I had found the internship through the SCAT listserv and days after I applied for the internship I was selected for an interview and hired. I spent almost 5 months as an intern on the 36th floor of the beautiful 1818 Market Street building where I assisted the Subscription Manager and Consumer Marketing Director daily. I was given instruction and tasks involving newsstand circulation and management, mail reports, and hotel contracts where our magazines were circulated. After my internship I was soon hired to be the Circulation Assistant where my internship was taken to a new level and I was then considered an employee.
Alex Irwin, Class of '08:
The communications major really gives you a chance to
explore a lot of the offerings in the School of
Communications and Theater. The flexibility makes scheduling
classes easy and prerequisites aren't usually an issue. With
so many choices for areas of study, it can be easy to lose
focus: That's where internships come in. I feel I made the
most of my experience at Temple by taking a wide variety of
classes, then focusing my attention on journalism through
internships where I learned what day-to-day jobs really
entail. If you're ambitious, combining this customizable
major with the learning potential in a major market like
Philadelphia creates great opportunities for learning and
your future career.
Jamie Fields, Class of '09:
I loved my internship with the Philadelphia Eagles. I have
learned a lot about the team, the NFL, and myself. This
internship has given me a once in a lifetime experience – one in which I will never forget. The Eagles have asked me
to continue to work for them during games and special
events. I hope that with my continued dedication to the organization, one day I may become a full time employee or
get a recommendation from the Eagles to another NFL
organization. Through this internship, I have found that my
love for sports is deeper than I once thought. I now know
that I want to pursue a career in sports.

My experiences with the School of Communications and Theater have been nothing short of rewarding. My courses and classroom experiences have prepared me well for my future and allowed me to get an internship at Comcast Corporations. I interned in the Government Affairs department where I wrote weekly newsletters to our department and other departments in the field. I was also responsible for writing to regional and divisional vice presidents about community outreach efforts we were participating in. My internship gave me invaluable life lessons not only about the corporate world, but also about myself, not to mention a lot of material to put in my portfolio! I know that if I was at any other university in any other communications program this opportunity and the many others I have received would not have been possible. I credit SCT with almost all of the opportunities I have been given in my college career and know that if it wasn’t for the communications program I would not be where I am today.

Before entering into my internship at a local law firm, I saw it as a way to make money and gain experience about the legal system before going on to my future career. However, after reflecting on my time at the firm, I have realized that I have truly lived my classroom experiences. Being able to observe and watch the theories taught in class first-hand has been invaluable and extremely rewarding as a future communicator. Yet underneath all of the lessons learned through this year, I have above all come to realize how powerful communication can be. Being a superior communicator is not just a good trait to posses, but more importantly is an essential part of being a member of a society. This experience has brought a purpose and meaning to my pursuit of becoming a remarkable communicator. Through my experience at my internship and in my continuing studies at Temple University, I feel that I am on my way to becoming a superb communicator, both in written and spoken communication.
