Faculty and Staff Information

Director Information:
The Program is directed by Dr. Scott Gratson, recently appointed to the position after serving in the Strategic and Organizational Communication (STOC) Department (formally the Department of Speech Communication). Dr. Gratson focus areas are as eclectic as the Program itself, including aspects of argumentation and debate, interpersonal and family communication, cultural and gender studies, and rhetorical analysis.

Originally a Detroit area resident "by way of Ohio, Indiana, and Colorado", Dr. Gratson is pleased to finally arrive at what he has referred to as "one of the most exciting possibilities that I have yet encountered at Temple University." Having had years of experience in hosting major academic events such as national debate competitions and public speaking events while also furthering a complex theoretical research framework, Dr. Gratson lends his expertise to the creation of a Program that "combines theory and practice, representing any number of academic and corporate possibilities and applications to the students who join us."

For more information on Dr. Gratson's expertise areas and background, please visit the Director's Bio link.

Faculty Information:
As majors in the Communications Program, students are able to take over 130 classes that can count toward graduation. The faculty that teach of these courses are housed in the different departments of the School of Communications and Theater. Please feel free to consult the School of Communications and Theater (SCT) faculty and staff directory for more information about many of our high caliber, professional, and widely known teachers.

Staff Information:
The Communications Program operates out of 9C Annenberg Hall
under the watchful eyes of Office Assistants Dan Suraci and
Amanda Garcia. Both are members of Temple University’s
prestigious Honors Program and have undertaken focused
academic projects with Dr. Gratson in New York City.

Amanda is a Communications Major, Art History Minor, and is
the student responsible for the newsletter and related
media. She uses all of these interests to serve as the
Communications Chair for the Honors Activities Board. Amanda
plans on studying abroad in London and Japan by the time she
graduates, and then hopes to continue studies on Mass Media
in graduate school in New York City.

Dan is a double major in both, Strategic and Organizational
Communications with a focus in Public Relations, and
Political Science; his responsibilities range from handling
Dr. Gratson’s schedule to assisting in the management of
large events. He is a volunteer honors program ambassador
and a member of the University Chorale singing group. Dan
has aspirations of studying abroad in Rome. After
graduation, Dan hopes to attend graduate school in New York
City.

Dan and Amanda are both thrilled to be working with Dr.
Gratson to insure the continuing smooth, efficient, and
effective operation of the Communications Program.

"The Temple University Communications Major is an interdisciplinary program that uniquely empowers students to explore, design, and implement a course of study in the field of communications that is specific to his or her interests and needs. As an interdisciplinary program, the Major gives a broad understanding of each department in the School of Communications and Theater"
