Developing a Study Emphasis


As a Communications Major you have the ability to bridge your education out to multiple disciplines. The Core Curriculum of the Program is designed to introduce the student to the various departments within the School of Communications and Theater. Upon completion of these core courses you will have experience with each SCT department.

Things to consider when constructing your study emphasis:

-What would I like to learn more about?
-What type of internships am I interested in?
-Which Program Core courses did I enjoy most?

Plentiful Options in Perspective
You may be feeling a bit overwhelmed by the pool of courses to choose from to fulfill your upper-level Program requirements. The best way to go about your course selection is to browse through the following SCT course listing, the Undergraduate Course Descriptions Bulletin, or visit the online course listings and make note of any courses that peak your interest. Your interest list will come in handy when you begin to make your upper-level Program course decisions.
Please note the Communications Major is a Program, not a department. Therefore, "Program requirements" refer to the Communications Major, while "departmental requirements" refer to the other departments within the School of Communications and Theater. In order to complete several of the upper-level departmental courses you must abide by the prerequisites listed, or seek instructor/professor permission. Please pay careful attention to course prerequisites, as instructors/professors reserve the right to dismiss you from any course if you have not satisfied the mandatory prerequisites. Planning your course selections in advance is the best way to ensure that you will be able to satisfy prerequisites and/or seek instructor/professor approval to enter into upper-level departmental courses.

Prerequisites Defined
A course prerequisite is any requirement an academic department identifies as essential for a student to complete before taking a course. The university is responsible for publishing prerequisite requirements. All prerequisites, whether they apply to an individual course or to all courses in a department should be stated in the electronic and print versions of the current edition of the University's Undergraduate Course Descriptions. They should also be stated on the course syllabus.
Students are responsible for knowing and completing all published prerequisite requirements for a course before taking that course. The University has the right to cancel a student's registration in a course if the student has not satisfied the published prerequisite requirements for that course (2004-2005 Undergraduate Bulletin).

Getting Permission to Waive Course Prerequisites
In order to have prerequisites waived, the student must receive authorized permission from the course instructor/professor. The course instructor/professor may not give permission to waive the prerequisites, in which the student must complete the prerequisites in order for the course to count towards the Program requirements. The Director of the Communications Program is not responsible for waiving course prerequisites, and reserves the right to deny credit to any student who does not abide by the prerequisite guidelines.

Pathways
Pathways refer to the various course sequences that different departments offer. Apart from going the traditional Program route, Communications students can opt to follow a pre-selected pathway. Each pathway focuses on a different skill set involving aspects of production, performance, theory, and writing- with a media literacy and teacher pathway in the works.
